I am doing everything I possibly know to help this, it is not going away.
Here is what I do:
-Strausberg sock at night
-ice
-stretch calf, piriformis, hammies & big toe attached to stupid PF
- massage
- the stick
- Calf board

Could my shoes be an issue? I roll out - a lot, very high arches. I am in Asics Kayano - don't know if they are lastest model. I was told the brooks ariel - my old shoe was not right because I roll out so much (sorry I never remember which pronate it is) But I NEVER had foot problem with them. My Asics shoes are about 1/2-2/3 throught thier life expectancey.

Anybody know anything about this? I have been to the PT, that is were I got the above regime. Hate Drs. beside I know it is PF. This is getting frustrating.......

If this product doesn't help, then nothing will

http://www.tpmassageball.com/

I will tell you, it hurts like hell if you do it right.

They are the best. I was having trouble before a race one year and went in with my typical sceptical attitude. The guy set me on the ground and showed me how to use it and watched while I did a few reps. He left to help someone else, told me to buy it, try it that night before the race and if it didn't help he would give me a full refund. I still have it!

luv2tri: make sure you are massaging the heck out of your calves. thats the root of the problem, the foot is a sympton of it.

CS: J worked for them last year so I got the whole rundown of how it works. but I actually learned about them at my first GC expo.

I have one of those massage balls too and I also agree with the calf stretching. But, by far the BEST remedy I found was this: http://www.heel-that-pain.com/

A couple of years ago, with all my running and tennis, I was in extreme pain and totally bummed that I was going to have to back off all my activities. I found these inserts and along with the massage and stretching, I have been PF free for many months. I swear by these things and I am usually very skeptical of stuff like this. The customer service is awesome too and I got mine in like 2 days. It is worth the try, I promise you. They helped relieve my pain in the first week, no kidding. I looked at that website for weeks before I finally ordered and then was mad I didn't do it sooner! I wear them in all my athletic shoes and loafer type shoes. (I have nothing to do with this company, just a very satisfied customer).

Other than that, Danskos shoes have been a wonderful solution to painful feet too. They are a little spendy, but SO worth not having painful feet.

Good luck... I know how frustrating and painful that pesky PF can be.

I'm doing acupuncture and that does seem to be helping. Of all things, mine hit while running with my doctor. He did ART massage, which got me through my 'thon training and race. It continued to get worse, which is why he suggested the voodoo. Generally, it's 6-8 needles. Two in my heel (hurts like all get out!). Two in my ankle. Two to four in my calf.

Sorry if I sound stupid, I am massaging my soleus muscle - but I thought that was the calf muscle. BTW - it is totally tight and I wrestle with it to loosen up daily. They are monster huge for a girl too (not just fat - there is a lot of muscle there too). Is there another calf muscle? Thanks.

Make sure you are massaging both of the two main muscles and the one that's sticking out the left. They all run under each other behind the leg.

I use my stick on the entire calf, even the dinky litlle muscle in the front. I Just may need to do more. I am gonna break down afterschool and go see our trainer here at school. 2 things I am gonna ask - SHOW me how to massage out this sucker myself, and How do I tape it. I found a couple of websites for taping. I really do not want to stop running, so I need to head this off at the pass. Taping has helped in the past - I just don't know how to do it - yet.

Do you think the ball folks will be at GCT this year, too?
I've been ogling that stuff, but want to see it and get a demo of how to make it work first.

In addition to all the good stuff here, I also use the tennis ball on the bottom of foot. I do it periodically during the day at work. I also try to never go barefoot. Though I am not so good from the locker room to the pool.

I swear by my Spenco inserts. They are in all my non running footware.

J9 what happened to your NB 1061 shoes? The Kayano is for people with lower arches that pronate (roll in). I am not saying it is the shoe that caused your PF but you should be in a neutral shoe. Next time you buy a shoe maybe look for the Brooks Dyad. This is a shoe like the Beast/Ariel without the posting. The NB 1062 or Asics Nimbus are also good. You could try putting an over the counter insert such as a Powerstep in your shoe. This would support your arches and take pressure off the tendons which are hurting and inflamed. Just my 2 cents! Sorry you have to deal with this. It is a stubborn thing. I had it a few years ago. When I used a Powerstep insert it went away. I also had to stretch, ice after runs and sleep with a night splint.

Hi Jane,

The NB 1061's made me trip. Seriously. Catch my toe, almost fall on my face tripping. I had a couple close calls on the TM. Got new shoes and it was gone. I have no idea why. I have orthotics, right now they are making me supinate even more (I remembered the right word!) so I pulled em out. I will have to go the dang shoe store again. ug. I hate trying to find new shoes. Most of the people in the running stores around here seem clueless... Good to hear from you! I miss the supertrimommies!
