TThe MRI showed two tendons (flexor digitorum brevis and plantar apneurosis tendons) are strained, and the ligament(s?) supporting my arch (spring ligament I believe) are sprained. He said it is more or less acute PF that shouldn't last like the chronic kind does.

The treatment is ice, elevate, anti-inflammatories, continue swimming and cycling. When it's not painful I can do elliptical, walking, light running (preferably treadmill) to exercise but I have to stop if it hurts or if it's painful after. (It is definitely still painful.)

I will go for some PT, but couldn't get in until a week from Monday (4/2).

The Dr's best guess was it will take 3-4 weeks to heal. Of course, I got the "Were you planning on running any more marathons?" and look of skepticism (not because of the injury, he said, but because "why anyone would want to do that".

Thanks sierra.

My birthday is in a little less than a month and I think going for a pain-free run would make a lovely gift! (Maybe even an early gift ...)

Not sure about any races at this point. That's probably premature, but hard to let go of all the great training I put in.

That would be a great birthday gift, but please, dont push it. (I am an expert on that, you DONT wanna go there!)

Hopefully you can maintain you training with all the cross training and then be ready to race again when you are able!

hey SGH, good news on the dx, imo. When i had acute PF i used something called "rigid arches" in my shoes (not for running) and it really helped speed up the healing and keep me from being painfree. Just a thought.

sgh,
I think that is GREAT news [compared to what might have been]

Think of it as a teachable moment:
show your students the benefits of X-training to maintain strength, cardio endurance, and flexibility.

Show them that they don't have to sit around and mope and lose fitness over the 3-4 wks.

HOWEVER, as a jewish soccermom I'm going to do the finger-wag and tell you DON'T OVERDO IT, k?

SGH,

It sounds like it is managable from a fitness standpoint. I'm glad it wasn't worse.

Good luck with the PT!

Good News. I think the PT will help, but then again I am biased in that dept! Remember to do your exercises! While you wait for your appt, an ice bath works WAY better than an ice pack. Like you're gonna give yourself a pedicure but in ice water! Painful at first but your foot will go numb quickly and it really works. Keep us posted.

I get that look from my doctor and his assistant. They find my running amusing and joke with me about it quite a lot while always questioning me about my future races but if they had their druthers, I'm pretty certain they consider marathon running more than "moderation" in physical activity.

Hope your foot heals quickly and completely.

Still achy, not as bad as the race day but bad enough to limit some activites (including some yoga/pilates stuff). I'm stepping up my icing regimen.

I'm fighting off the blues about it, too. But that's not productive and of course I WILL be back.

I'm starting to wonder if heat and/or arch supports would be helpful at this point.

SGH, glad it's not something worse! Have you considered Active Release? Arrojo used to have pretty bad PF and swears that ART cured him (or does your PT person do the same stuff?).

I giggled at what your doc said. I remember the first time I ran 13 miles and I said to DH "Why the *F* would ANYONE want to run 2x that???"

Jen, I'm thinking about calling the ART guy today. He's an hour away, so it's a bit of a time issue to get to appts. My massage therapist got in to the injured area on Tuesday and that actually felt pretty good. I thought I'd be kicking her!

Next week is PT and a podiatrist appt. to see if I should go with some orthotic or arch support device.
