"...and thowing up all over the courtyard. And what the hell is beer pong - that's just stupid."

He's face to face with kids from English speaking Canada and the States whose sole mission right now is to get plastered all the time. He's aligned himself with the Europeans who are marvelling at the spectacle.

He's also lonely. He'll survive.

He and some newfound friends went down the hill to a grocery store and bought fixings for supper and then climbed to the top of Mt. Royal through the hole in the U fence and had a picnic.

French kid (from France) asked "Why is it that the English (meaning Canadians and Americans) go to bars and beat each other up?"

Good question.

I remember listening to the ambulance repeatedly go from UBC hospital to Totem Park Residence on Friday and Saturday nights to pick up the idiots who drank too much each weekend. Not all of the kids are there just to get plastered and those that are will get weeded out relatively quickly. It sucks if you get stuck with one of them in residence.

The key is to find a good place away from residence to study. Then move off campus next year.

To be fair to the Canajun kids, we send them away from home to go to school at the same time we let them drink legally. The Europeans have probably been drinking since they were 12 and its no big deal to them - hell, their parents probably taught them how to drink responsibly.

beer pong is the shit! And those merry fuckers he described are the ones who cant regulate their damn liquor and will be gone after the second semester (it would be the first, but they'll be allowed to remain after some persistent badgering from mommy and daddy, who have status in society!)....I was a goddamn alcoholic my last 2 years, but i got by because i knew when to stop...i was drunk off my ass plenty of times, but never once got sick/in trouble. It did help that i was a mellow drunk and tried to use big words and start philosophical discussions with everybody

If his experience is like mine, he'll enjoy it progressively more every year. The nice thing about college is that it's a much more heterogenous mix of people than most are used to and you'll always find like-minded people to fraternize with....as oby is discovering.

I can totally see DS doing that next year. He doesn't put up with people that want to act like that at all. I wonder where he got his impatience from?

This is my younger daughter's first year of college. She is living at home. I asked her if she felt like she was missing out on the whole dorm experience, and she said no, from what she heard there is so much loud partying and stuff, she really prefers being able to get 8 hours of sleep.

I found we had a good mix of people and a good level of moderation when I went to university. I lived in a dorm on a floor with 15 other girls. We had our party times and had a lot of fun (some of us from time to time drank too much, I won't lie). Other times we were totally mellow. We also knew when to study and get our work done. And we all stuck up for one another. I can't remember any of us ever getting into a fight with anyone.

I hated that part of college!!! I lived in a rooming house just off campus on what is known as OSU's Frat Row. Girls staying out til all hours drinking, coming home late and puking all over the place. Then, of course, they'd be pissed at me getting up early on weekends (7am) to head out for a ride... I was so happy to graduate and get on with real life!
