For some reason, I challenged my younger, male, soccer-player co-worker to a race around the block which would be approximately half a mile. I have tentatively set the "race" for mid-March.<br><br>
I feel like I am destined to lose. He has run a 6:14 min/mile in HS. I have never run anything faster than an 8:30 (during a recent 5K).<br><br>
I currently don't do any speedwork of any kind and am not really sure what I can do to actually get better at such a distance. Any suggestions? Where is Arrojo? <img alt="sad.gif" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/sad.gif">

Nettie - you should go on the juice! If it's good enough for all of MLB, it's good enough for you...<br><br>
You have your work cut out for you, but at the very least, you may find some new "gears" you never knew you had.<br><br>
Do you do any tempo runs (~half marathon pace) or VO2max (~5K pace) during the week?

You don't have a chance in hell of beating your coworker unless he/she does not run any longer and does not train. In that case, if you are serious you might have a chance. Pick up a copy of Daniels' Running Formula and have a look at his 1500 to 3000 meter training plans.

I don't do any of that. <img alt="sad.gif" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/sad.gif"> All of my runs are pretty much at the same pace.<br><br>
My coworker does not run except for when playing or practicing for soccer. I don't think he practices that much.

Seriously - the guy that ran the 400m bet that was the older smoker also played soccer and those dudes are quick...whether or not he can maintain it, who knows, but since he has a running background, he probably can. Can you set time goals for each of you - aggressive, but achievable? Do some shorter speedwork (short burst, 25-30 seconds hard) - coupled with your endurance, that should help a lot.<br><br>
Don't blame me - the other guy was the one who opened his yapper! I don't bet on my running ability because I know what I can and cannot do, and I have minimal ego!

I surrender - today is most assuredly an OFF day!<br><br>
Minimal ego in real life - I don't think too much of my running abilities - or more accurately, I am pretty sure most people don't want to hear about my running so I don't go on & on about it.

Me and my coworker talk all the time (at work), so I do talk about running some of the time and the challenge was mostly something for us to do to make it through the days of our lives. However, if I was going to lose by a large margin (as it appears I would), my fragile ego would not have been able to take it, so I'll have to think of something else...perhaps a binge eating contest?

Nettie - why not expand your challenge to include a 5K or 10K race as well. His raw speed isn't going anywhere, but if you can stretch out the distance, you can just "out endurance" his sprinty ass!

That's an idea TAK! If I actually train specifically for a 10K, maybe just maybe, I could kick his booty.

Buy him lots of doughnuts between now and then. Take him out drinking the night before. Tie his shoelaces together just before you start.

If he hasn't been training you might be better off by lengthening the distance. Tell him you dont even get warmed up for a good 3 miles. Make it a 5 mile race and make it tomorrow.... <img alt="smile.gif" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/smile.gif">

He already says he doesn't like running if it's not while he's doing something else (like playing soccer), so maybe the psychological thought of the distance would be his undoing.

Nettie - One thing, joking apart, the training for doing something like this will only be beneficial to you. You have long term ambitions to dramatically improve your marathon times, and one way of building on this for the future would be to introduce some speed work into your training.<br><br>
Yes, on the face of it, your co-worker should be beating you over 800, and probably over any distance up to 5K. BUT, that's not to say that you couldn't increase your own pace by doing some 400m track reps - Why not give it a try and see what happens (even if you bag the actual race) - You just may see a heck of an improvement in your other times when you bring speed to the equation <img alt="smile.gif" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/smile.gif"><br><br>
Try a few 400's as fast as you can, with two minutes rest between each one, start with trying to run 3x400, after a nice warm up run, and let us know what sort of times you can manage - I'll bet money you will surprise yourself and it will rub off for other distances.<br><br>
