I did my first 5K 10 years ago. I started running 12 years ago (not consistently, very fair-weather), but have been "more serious" about it for about 3.5 years.

Since 1999. I had begun to put on weight and it was either diet or take up exercise. In my youthful days (1970's) I ran on U.S. Marine Corps relay teams in Hawaii so I decided to begin running again. I couldn't run a mile without rest breaks. I can still remember the 1st time I ran 2 miles without having to sit down along the route. I ran the Peachtree Road Race that year for my first race since leaving the Marines in '77.

Since 1995. My first race was a 5K in 1997 where I took 3rd for my age group. I assumed this was just the beginning of greatness. That hasn't actually unfolded. I'm not powerfully competitive or fast.

And I continue to need to focus on consistency and goal-setting.

Started in 1991.

Shortly after I started (approximately 3 months) I tore the medial meniscus cartiledge in my right knee. Didn't start back up again until April of 1992.

I ran until 2000 until I fell during a road race in July of 2000 and hurt my left ankle (I did run a 5K in August of 2000, but it was in a lot of pain). I was out of commission for a year or so with the ankle.

I started back in 2001, and I've been running since.

I started really running in April 2004. So I'm coming up on three years.

I ran during the summer and fall of 2002, far, far less than I do now, and then I stopped.

Since 1998 to prepare for the first ever Flying Pig Marathon in 1999.

And this year I'll be running my 9th consecutive Pig.

3 years, 2 months and 1 day.

Started running after quitting any and all sports that require quick stop-n-start motions. I had just finished rehabbing a re-attached Achilles tendon which burst 9 months earlier during a basketball game.

I've been running... *counts* 7.5 years.... it will be 8 in August.

Started in 1999 because I couldn't run a full mile like I needed to to pass gym class. (Yay for PE! Boo for schools cutting it) Within four months, I was running 10 miles at a stretch. Sweet.

For me, just a little over two years. I started running as a New Year's resolution in January of 2005 and I haven't looked back.

Trying to get better in a serious way since late 2004, so really about 2.25 years. Just think, I only got to the point where I could run 3 miles continuously last September. That's almost 2 years. How embarrassing! But, at least I got there. I suppose that shows I have a lot of stubborness.

Prior to 2004 I was just running off and on, mixed with walking and inline skating for exercise to lose weight. Running is more effective and that's why I started focusing on it. Now I want to get better at it.

wow. You might be the first I've "known" to actually do that... that being still be out there as a result of a New Years resolution.

In the three January's I've watched roll around at the trail I run daily, I bet I've seen 60-70 people start running as a New Years resolution. I've never seen one last past the first of February. Not one. Sure, some could still be going somewhere else....

Congrats! You got some fortitude!

Thank you for the kind words. I'm not sure if it was fortitude or just plain getting "hooked" when someone talked me into running a 5K. After the race, I was so excited and I've been loving every minute of it since then.
