He was best man, I was bridesmaid at a wedding. I had no ride to the wedding, 5 hours from where we all lived, so the couple arranged him to be my transportation to Jamestown NY. After the wedding, he asked if I'd been to Niagara Falls, a short drive north of there. I hadn't. So we took a trip up there and he developed one of his classic migraines. He has a childhood eye injury that continues to bring these things on. Anyhow, out of commission, there we were stuck overnight by the falls because at the time I 1)didn't know how to drive a stick and 2)had no map reading skills. I could not possibly have found our way back to Binghamton from Niagara. Hard to believe that now. Anyhow, after inadvertently spending the night with him in his car I felt the only honorable thing to do was marry him.
We met online when it was just pedos and teenagers.

We talked online for 2 weeks before he met me at my work. We hung out that night and we've been off and on ever since.
clb, love that story!

I met Philip at my best friend's graduation from dental school, and our mutual friend was trying to fix him up with her! So even though he wasn't interested, she was a little, and that made him off limits for me. We were friends for over a year before we realized the major chemistry, I had a chat with my BF (she had no interest by then but it was only right) and DH and I began dating.
In the spring of 1971, I was a senior in HS.
So, Mr T was the last one on the plane from Orlando to Hartford...standby...love at first flight!
Its such a tangled twisted story. In highschool/early college, I dated a guy we'll call J. I fixed his friend R up with my roommate, D.

D & R stayed together, J and I did not. A year or so later, I was out of town, but in the town where R lived, and D was there. I got stood up by my date that evening, so I called them to see what they were up to, and they invited me over. Mark was there. We started dating about 2 years later, and got married three years after that.
Back in Jan 2007 I moved to DC. Having been single for almost 2 years, I joined match.com on a dare.

One day I was bored and decided to see what the dating pool in Ireland looked like. In match.com, when you look at a profile the other person can see who looked at them. So, after I glanced at this profile of a handsome bloke (who happened to use the same quote in his profile that I used )...he sends me an email asking what in the heck an American is doing looking at someone thousands of miles away.

We chat back and forth for awhile...but not really flirting as we both realize a 3500 mile relationship would be a bit silly. I find out he's a marathon runner and is running Boston. That we have a lot in comomon, etc. At this same time I started seeing another guy from match, and although the Irish guy and I keep in touch off and on, we eventually lose touch.

Fast forward to August. Relationship ends, life is in upheaval. Decide to travel to Ireland for my birthday in September as a treat. On a whim, I email the Irish boy to see if he'll be in town. Turns out, he won't...as he was traveling for work and was in Czech Repulic.

Anyway, I proceed to have a blast in Dublin for my birthday. And start throwing around the idea of moving there. So, I decide to extend my stay to do some "research". A day into my extra stay, I get an email from Irish guy asking how my trip to Dublin was. He thought I was home in the States. Told him I was still in town, and asked if he'd like to get together for a drink or dinner or something. 45 minutes after that email was sent, we met for dinner. Hit it off immediately.

Weird. As back in january 2007 I would have never, in a million years, imagined that come 2008 I would be on my way to being permanently living in Ireland and dating this amazingly kind and <cough>sexy<cough> guy.
Funny thing, my story actually starts with these words:

"This one time, at band camp..."

Yes, DW and I met in the University of Alabama Marching band. She was an incoming freshman and I was a returning sophomore. I'm sure that I made quite the impression on the day when vets returned to camp. Freshman had been there already going through Freshman band orientation. Then we reported, and I was hungover and still wearing the clothes from the night before.

Anyway, somehow, when we got the first show formation, we were positioned right next to each other. I however, was on a bit of dating tear since I had broken up with my HS girlfriend at the end of the summer. So, in October, I invited her to a birthday party that my parents threw for me while we were on the band trip to Knoxville to play UT. A week later, we went on our first date, and the rest is history. Married 13 years this summer ; together 18 years this coming October.
OK, there is more to the story.

We were in an Ethics class at college, but had never spoken. Normally I would go right to the library to do math homework after class, but this particular day there was a knock at the door and the teacher interrupted class to answer. She turned around, looking a bit ashen, and said "The Space Shuttle just exploded. Everyone go home. Watch the news and we'll talk about it tomorrow."

So both DW and I headed out towards our apartments on the same route. We started talking. She figured out I was a brainiac and asked if we could study for tests together. I figured out she was a major-league hottie and said yes. We became drinking buddies and confidants, but not romantic as we were both coming off of long-term relationships and didn't want to be involved at the time.

After I graduated I worked in the pharma industry for a while, then took a traveling concierge job with S&H motivation (remember green stamps?) She moved to East Lansing to live with her sister for a while. I sent a postcard from St. Thomas. She wrote back asking to hang out sometime. I invited her to a house-party weekend in Traverse City. Love blossomed.

Eighteen months later we moved to Oregon along with my best friend from college. After 2 years we scraped up enough cash to purchase a house together. 2 more years and we decided to make it official. Fourteen years this August.
