When I was in a drugstore in Connecticut a couple of weeks ago, the woman in front of me bought a pack of Marlboros for more that $7.50. Holy buckets, that's alot of money. When I was in college, I could get a pack of Lucky Strikes for $2. At $7.50, a pack a day smoker is making the equivalent of a car payment each month.

I remember writing a paper for my economics class in college about the cigarette tax and the demand curve for cigarettes being inelastic. I wonder how expensive they'll have to be before people really stop smoking.

NY just raised the tax per pack by $1.60 the other day. I think the price per pack in NYS is very close to $10.

2 pack a day smoker = $600/mo. Yikes!

Don't most smokers in Nova Scotia smoke native cigarettes?

Or just make it illegal. There is lots of $ in tobacco. Tobacco $ = political power. If you tried to eliminate tobacco, you would lose $ and therefore, your staite would fail, and you wouldn't be reelected. Plus, you'd have to come up with the extra tax revenue.

if it were just about health, it would be illegal, like cocaine

Increases in cigarette taxes do reduce smoking. There is ample evidence from good science showing this. I can look up the effect magnitude if needed.

The Federal and state governments cover a lot of costs incurred by smoking, not the least of which are the health effects caused by first and secondhand smoke to medicare and medicaid recipients (as well as veterans and military personnel). The taxes earned from tobacco sales do not even come close to covering these costs.

While obesity is a big problem, the Snickers analogy does not work. A smoker is addicted to tobacco and most will smoke 10-40 cigarettes per day. A person with an eating problem will consume far fewer Snickers bars. In addition, by and large (and partially due to subsidies), junk food is cheap and getting cheaper while tobacco is getting more expensive.

The notion that tobacco = $$$ = power is outdated. While this is true in a couple states and other countries, for the most part in the USA the tobaco power has waned. This is why most major tobacco companies have substantially diversified and gone after international markets.

I can see that perhaps those that already smoke will keep doing it ... what I don't get is with the soaring costs why any new smokers even bother to start!

Exactly! And it's not just the cost. Everybody knows that cigarettes are bad for your health. Maybe if you started smoking in 1960 you didn't know it. But anybody under the age of 60 started smoking with the knowledge that they're bad for you. And nowadays when they're this expensive? I have no idea what a new smoker is thinking...

My dad smoked 2-4 packs a day. he can't buy a carton because he knows that if he had a carton lying around he'd smoke them all. He buys them one at a time. It's so sad because he quit for a few months last year after the accident and got stressed out and it started up again.

It's a ridiculously expensive bad habit.

I believe a pack of smokes has 20 cigarettes. Do you know anyone that eats 20 snicker bars a day, everyday, for years?
A cigarette is still cheaper than a Snickers Bar even $15 a pack (Smiler's deli, New York).
