I heard this on the radio. Somewhere here in CT some HS Honor society and class VP has been removed from office and will not be allowed to attend the honor society dinner because he (think it was a he) bought a bag of Skittles.

Assuming the press has not reported the story in a way to "spin" it to get me to stay with their station, has the pendulum swun so far that one's educational recognition is affected by a "sweet tooth"

Here is the story:

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Contraband candy has led to big trouble for an eighth-grade honors student in Connecticut.

Michael Sheridan was stripped of his title as class vice president, barred from attending an honors student dinner and suspended for a day after buying a bag of Skittles from a classmate.

School spokeswoman Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo says the New Haven school system banned candy sales in 2003 as part of a districtwide school wellness policy.

Michael's suspension has been reduced from three days to one, but he has not been reinstated as class vice president.

He says he didn't realize his candy purchase was against the rules, but he did notice the student selling the Skittles on Feb. 26 was being secretive.

Yeah, next thing you know, he'll be downing a whole sleeve of chips-ahoys and chasing it with a glass of low fat milk!

We can have zero tolerance for that type of behavior.

Wow. That's like, worse than accidentally bringing a plastic knife to school in your lunch box. Skittles and plastic ware. The scourge of society and responsible for low test scores and the breakdown of the American family.

Amen. You see it everywhere... policies put in place with good intentions (what's not to like about wellness?), and then the whackos get a hold of it. Sounds like my son's middle school. They treat the kids like little criminals. My kid... straight A student, basketball player, soccer player, honor society... got 2 days of in-school suspension for (gasp) wearing his pants too low. Ok, it's a stupid look, but come on...

The school rep said the district banned candy sales. I interpret that as the district is no longer selling candy.

Why do they hate the black market! I demand a copy of this "policy"!
