Well, not our 19th, but it has been running for 19 years. Dear friends of ours started it out in someone's basement. It's overgrown the basement and several community halls since then. Now we're ensconced in a campus church that has large halls, a great kitchen and numerous nooks and crannies so that we can invite musical friends along to spend the afternoon and evening on New Year's Day.

The celts take most of the space, we let 'em. We have a beautiful high-ceilinged room with a fireplace to join with friends in a singer's circle. Here are some vids from yesterday. Unfortunately the quality of the picture isn't improved by porting to Youtube, but you'll get an idea.

The first is of our friend Blaine, with whom I've made a New Year's resolution to make some noise with. Here he is instructing the bodhran player (me) on the tempo he wants for his song. My revenge is cutting the top of his head off for most of the song.

Here's our friend Mark, a singer-songwriter who is married to Sue and who was the founder of this session lo these many years ago. The song has some in-jokes, he sings of the Conservative government of Alberta, and if you can't catch the lines he also sings of AIG and the big-three automakers. It is a song about jam. Go figure.

And I will leave you with a song shared by our friend Sue (the musical friend I've written of) and her dear friend Nancy who with her husband Al has spent the holidays with Sue and Mark. They are from Winnipeg and have known each other for many many years. The song is particularly poignant given Sue's condition. Sue has been learning the banjo for a few years now and is my inspiration.
