Holiday Mile-A-Day Challenge - Week 2

Holiday Mile-A-Day Challenge - Week 2 of 6

Challenge

Run at minimum a mile per day from Thanksgiving through New Year's. Why? Because we can. As of this writing, we have 20 streakers, so know that you are not alone. Know that on those days you don't feel like doing anything, someone else is feeling the same way; and both of you will get up and do it. Why? Why not!

Also, it's not too late for newcomers to join. I can add you to the list.

Remember that this is for us. Which means that if your body says, "I cannot physically run a mile every day," you have grounds to redefine "Mile" to be anything that works with what you have. Just don't cheat. Mile-A-Day means doing something every day. And this challenge is meant to keep it light and provide fun ideas.

Week 2 - Monday, Nov. 28 thru Sunday, Dec. 4

First full week, so let's make it count!

Monday & Tuesday
Since I suck (re: late getting out this note), you were on your own for the first two days of the week. If you still have Tuesday to complete, why not pick your favorite 3 mile loop, only today you will do it in reverse direction of the way you normally do. I swear when I say that it'll be like doing a completely different loop. You will notice houses and things you don't normally. Changing up routes in this way keeps things more fresh. Which keeps you fresh.

Wednesday
This, if you're following a plan or the traditional training week, will be one of your more quality runs. Do that as-is. You need nothing more. If you're not following a plan, such as myself right now, you have Wednesday open for some good miles. Today do a route that you have never done before. Go for 3 to 4 or even 5 or more miles. Your call. But try a different route. I will do a new route tomorrow. Since I have run on nearly all roads in my area, I will have to be creative. But I'm game.

Thursday & Friday
If you ran quality yesterday, you'll likely go short on one of these days, presumably the day after, and it might be just a mile. Why not warm up a half a mile and then do some easy strides of 10 to 15 seconds on the return leg? If you didn't do quality or go longer yesterday, pick your own here. Maybe even treat yourself to a run with music -- bring your iPod! Or you can do what xflbk does and try to do a mile on the fast side!

Saturday
Saturday or Sunday is traditionally a long run day. I challenge you to do your long run -- or whatever will serve as your "main" weekend run, be it 3 miles, 5 or 15 -- with a friend. Yes, send an email to a friend or group and ask if they want to run. Running with company is the single best way to keep you motivated and running strong toward your goals. It's a fact. I am coming on 8 years of streak running, and I promise you that I could not have gone that long, nor committed this to lifestyle, without social runs. While you are running, you will also ask this person to run with you next week during the week. Because next week, you will run with them. Got it? Good.

Sunday
Assuming you ran yesterday, Sunday might be an easy, down day. If so, and if you want to only go for a walk, chose a walking route that is not the same as any of your running routes. Maybe cruise through the neighborhood across the street. Walk for 20 minutes or more. No stress. Just start walking. Don't even think about where you will go. Instead, slip into the cartoon in your head.

*Next week will start a few really fresh ideas for keeping your runs fun. If you're up for playing along, these will be fun. And they really keep you highly motivated. Plus, there will be a slightly tougher challenge. But I promise it will be fun. But it may not sound fun at first! :)

gah, Thor, I'd rather run in the sleet and snow. mostly because my lungs don't work when it's below about 20 - 25 or so.

I ran my Monday route backwards, just because. It was awesome since it's the Monday night "group" run, and since I'm slower than everyone I'm usually all by my self unless Adam runs with me. Since I ran the opposite loop, I saw a steady stream of people I knew running the other way. Kind of nice, plus I had to think and focus since it was just different enough.

well its a good thing we have this challenge since I'm challenged today, nothing big just the time slots keep vanishing and the plans changing. Work is moving into the mid holidays frenzy (we don’t' want to work before Christmas or thanksgiving or right after so the in-between weeks contain everything we should have been doing). We had a bad windstorm which prevented me from paddling this am and its making a second swipe this pm (JenO must have entertained it in-between). I spent the time going to pick up a lunch walking partner only to have her cancel when I got there. So I have to kick myslef out, there's always the default hilly 2 mile walk. Just a little more work and I'll get out there!

Edited to add so far:

Monday hilly 3 mile walk and surf surprise 1 mile ow swim

tuesday: clear and calm 2 mi ow swim

wed: 1.5 mile (approx) super windy choppy COLD ow swim with tons of dolphins (were they trying to absorb our warmth?) also painting priming scraping trim then covering said paint with plastic when the weahter forecast changed.

thursday...gotta get it done!

NICE!!! And this is yet another reason why running different routes adds freshness.

Awesome. Pick that free time and go! Don't think... just do! Love it.

Just a reminder: If you have a day when all you do is a mile, try going out a half mile and then doing strides on the return leg. It'll keep your legs firing nicely.

Weekend reminder: Try to do your quality weekend run with another person or group. Keep it fun. Talk about holiday plans. Occupy This!

Thor.....

True....dressing for cold is infinitely easier than dressing for wet.

And, if it's both wet and cold...

I'm a wuss, I stay inside.....unless the wet starts AFTER I start running. In that case, I just deal with it and run home.

Because, afterall, I'm basically wet after sweating.

My asthma makes the acclimation to the cold an interesting process.

I didn't mean I would miss a day, I just thought that I would only get In 1 mile runs today and tomorrow. However I got home early Today .and did 2 plus outside so all is good.

I haven't worked in a new route yet this week - still stuck to tm due to logistics - I'm looking forward to getting outside on Saturday and trying something new.

Mon: 1 mile

Tues: 1 mile

Wed: 45 min run/walk

Thurs: 1 mile

Might not get back here for a few days, so thought I'd read up on this week's workouts for some ideas and inspiration!!

Yesterday did a little over 5 miles on the mill - some 5 min "speed" intervals and a few short hills at the end. Today did p90x back/chest and did just 1 mile on the mill tonight (took your advice Thor and did the first 1/2 mile at a comfortable pace, then picked it up for the second). Short run and p90x on tap tomorrow!

Since both my morale and fitness levels are down, can I just commit to at least walking a mile everyday and getting some air? I'll try to get to running some of these (or longer distances) but am so overwhelmed with life, if I can even get out the door, it would be a huge deal to me. I won't count cycling/swimming/other workouts in my pledge (in case I get around to adding some of them) ... let me know if I can join the pack. Baby steps, I need baby steps back to Ironman training ...

BTW, if the 1 mile on the TM gets boring, or if you have a longer run on the TM and are looking for something different, if you aren't doing a workout, consider doing one. It'll make the time fly by. I swear. TM is similar to a bike trainer. It doesn't beat you up nearly as much as the road. So you can do some speed or pickups without it pounding you like if you did it on the road. So maybe warm up for 10 minutes. At 8 minutes into the WU, toss in two 30 second pickups of a little faster. Then launch into 4 x 3 minute pickups with 3 minutes rest. Or do more. Adjust pace so that it is aggressive but does not wreck you. You'll get in a good sweat, and the time will fly by! This is akin to doing "a new route." Just something different. That's all. BTW, nice work!

AWESOME. And hey, which Fat Ass are you doing? I love Fat Asses. I got into ultra running that way. Did a Fat Ass 50K several times. Love the lowkey flair to it.

Sunday, keep the streak alive by going for a walk to stretch those legs. If you feel inclined to run, just go a mile, and then walk before and after to stretch the legs. It'll hurt but will feel good once the muscles relax some.

Welcome aboard. For "tips" and ideas, read the first post on this thread (back one page) AND the first post on the Week 1 thread. Tons of ideas there. And also clearly lists out that this is for you, so you define what a mile is (in Mile-A-Day), and it also suggests that you do not make it more than it is, so don't try to run for an hour every day, or don't try to go for 20 minutes. Do what works for you. But no cheating. Just get out there. You'll have some days where all you give is 10 to 20 minutes. That's okay. Just like today! Get in 20 minutes. But use some of the ideas here to help make it fun so that you're not eying the watch the whole way and then thankful when it's over. You get the idea.

You're among the strongest people I know. Decide to do this for yourself. And then don't waver. You deserve it.

And I'm with you on the cold weather running. I'm still trying to figure out the gear. I managed to need to keep my thermal cap on for the entire run today. Usually I can barely stand a regular cap for anything more than the warm up. This, of course, means I usually don't run in cold weather. And I know today's run wouldn't count as cold by most folks standards.

3.25 mile run/walk today. That's not far, but it's farther than I've managed post accident. And with less hip pain. Progress!
