High School cancels football game due to opponent's players size

A Rhode Island high school has cancelled a game for this Friday due to the size of the opposing team's players, who are much bigger than their team. The coach is concerned about injuries and therefore prefers to take the forfeit or whatever penalty the division mets out for refusing to play the other team. I don't remember ever hearing of a high school cancelling a league game due to the opposing team's size.

Dude.

And in the original story, those guys are 300-350 lbs. That's huge for a college player.

Forfeiting was the right thing. They weren't quitting because they were scared of losing. It's not about sportsmanship or what you're teaching the kids. It wouldn't be right to risk their lives for a game.

Ridiculous and dangerous to have him playing against 2nd-graders. Absolutely irresponsible.

Am I the only one who sees the irony that this happened in the smallest US state?

175 is Huge for a second grader.. but given that some of the boys at our school are lighter but are VERY strong kids and could do some damage in a game. One has an older brother that is is suiting up with the varsity team at the high school even though he is a freshman.

If the coach felt it was truly unsafe - he was probably right to forfeit rather than risk injury. Here they keep the calls close and the games are managed well by the referees actually, It makes for really great games when they do that.

175 lbs in second grade? Hell I weight 175 lbs in grade 12!

Just an aside here, and nothing against anyone whose children are in youth football.

But don't you think 2nd grade is a little young for tackle football?

They start in 5th grade here.

Just wondering.

For us, 2nd grade is flag. 3rd starts tackle.

Fortunately, we haven't had major issues. I know when Mr Scoobs played, he was deemed too big and was playing on the 6th/7th grade team in 5th grade (Cincinnati)

I'd say if the coach felt he needed to cancel the game because of size, he wasn't doing his job very well. When my son played HS football, their team was always on the small size. My son played offensive line at 180 lbs and had to go up against players that were sometimes 240 lbs. The coach was great and taught the game well.... we never had injuries that I considered was due to size..... and we always had a winning record.

240 =/= 350

This

sounds to me like all the teams in the league have a problem with Lawrence Academy but that this St Georges coach is the first to do SOMETHING about it and hope the powers that be figure out a way to even the playing field ... winning every game (but 2) by more than 40 points ... IN FOOTBALL??? WTF!?

WHY would Lawrence Academy not want to find a more competitive league to play within? What kind of lesson are the kids there learning from being set up to never have to even try to win or work hard to win?

I think it's f'd up that private schools recruit and hoard and dominate state championships in every sport every year and nothing seems to be done to stop it ... I think that the fact these 'kids' on St Lawrence's High School team are bigger than many college football players certainly warrants an in depth investigation if steroid use and/or off-season training programs are illegally being used ... coaches are not allowed to hold mandatory practices or lead formal practices for much of the off-season ... kids in the same school team are not allowed to be in organized sports leagues outside of their school with more than 1-2 other teammates even within other leagues ...

I'd be willing to bet a lot of shady dealings are going on to make the MONSTARS of St Lawrence Academy .. and I think it SUCKS for all the kids in youth and highschool sports nowadays that big money sponsors, coaches and many parents only see their kids as a mealticket thru winner take all and common sense be damned - we want a PRO that apparently must be cultivated and built from elementary or middle school ... who cares if most of these kids end up injured, over-trained, burned out and probably hating the sport ... everybody thinks they're going to be part of the newest '7 degrees of Bacon' and be connected to the newest Montana, Magic, or Howe *rolling eyes in disgust*

175 pounds in second grade?

Last year in my school of 800 I had 0ne kid who weighed that much...he was in 8th grade....and was 6' 3"

My high school was always very very tiny compared to competing teams. It was very obvious and sometimes scary, but luckily we did not have a foot ball team. I think what this coach did was the right choice.
