I am tossing around the idea of buying a headlamp, mostly for running, but maybe for some hiking as well.

I hope to spend less than $40 and I don't know where to start, any suggestions?

thanks

Um, admin, why isn't this thread locked? The conversation's done.

Ok, there are Black Diamond devotees out there, too, but none have shown up yet...

As has been said the two best out there are Petzel and Black Diamond, BD are a little too large and bulky for me so I'm another Petzel follower.

There are several different models you may wish to look at, the Tikka+ is not the only option although it is the benchmark. You may also want to look at the E-Lite, Tactikka, Tikkina and Zipka models. There are some changes between them which you may find interesting.

I bought one that was very inexpensive at a department store. It is very uncomfortable and I found that it doesn't shine on the road like I want it to so I wear it around my waist insead and it works great!

I'm partial to these two from Black Diamond. I really like "Spot" on the left

I definitely agree with the Petzl choices, but I prefer the MYO XP. A bit brighter than the Tikka. Only problem is that it is more than you want to spend (~$65 - 70). Good luck.

http://en.petzl.com/petzl/LampesProduits?Produit=554

I use the BD Zenix IQ. It takes two AA batteries with the compartment in the rear. It has two small LEDS and on reflectored one for longer / faster running. I love it so much I bought a spare because I think they are discontinued, but you can still find them easily on line.

My first headlamp was a Petzl Tikka. It works just fine but I was finding that it wasn't bright enough nor did it have different levels. I had the original one so perhaps the newer versions have improved by including this. Last year, before VT, I wanted a new light that had some more lightling options and also tilted, so I bought the Black Diamond Spot. I have nothing bad to say about it.

If you have an REI store in your area, check them out. They stock a ton of these devices (although maybe more in the fall season when the daylight is shortening up).

I have a Myo XP and have one gripe with it, that would seem to be common to most headlamps.

If there is anything dispersive in the air, a headlamp naturally shines right in front of your eyes. The beam starts at your forehead and mostly points down so it crosses your vision a foot or so in front of your eyes. If there is dust, gnats, or breath fog there, it dazzles you with a glowing fog across your vision. I've had the worst problem if the temperature drops near the dewpoint. Very minor breath fog that would be invisible otherwise becomes a glowing annoyance.

I've seen people move their headlamp to around their chest in these circumstances which should completely fix the problem as the beam no longer goes right in front of their eyes. Anyone know which headlamps support this?

Campmor.com usually has great deals on headlamps less than $40. Make sure you get 3 or 4 LEDS. Mine is a Princeton Tec which is nearly identical to BD and Petzel, but a little cheaper. So far, no complaints. Todays headlamps are so much better than the ones out 10 years ago!

Petzl has a really nice head lamp. It is LED with low, medium, bright, and strobe capability. It also has a reflecting type lense if needed. I used it all last fall for night runs. Love it!

I have the Tikka XP

http://en.petzl.com/petzl/LampesAccueil
