There is a video on Youtube and a lead story on Google regarding this. As someone who has spent a lot of time in airports - I'm at the point where I simply don't want to fly any more. Between the long lines and rude minimum wage TSA officials and the lunacy of some of their practices, I think we've gone too far One article says they actually search and pat down the flight crew! Do you think the guy sitting in the front of the plane needs a bomb to take it down???? That is just stupid. There is a planned 'boycott' on the 24th where passengers are encouraged to refuse to use the full body scanner and force the TSA to hand search them - causing even more delays. How much of our 'freedoms' are we willing to give up for fear of terrorists. I am beginning to wonder whether they have already won?

Hmmm. I don't know about that HP. These pat downs are done by members of the same sex.

This is what I worry about: The TSA is clearly going to insane measures to prevent another terrorist attack on an airplane. So if I were a terrorist, I'd put a bomb on an Amtrak train on its way into Grand Central or Penn Station. (Note: I am not a terrorist and I am not planning on bombing anybody).

There is absolutely zero security aboard passenger trains. You could practically carry a lit stick of dynamite right on board with you without anybody saying anything. If they did say something, it would probably be because they were asking you to put out your cigarette. So why would terrorists go thru all the hassle of trying to bypass security at an airport and undertaking a big risk of getting caught??

They could, in theory, take down an airliner without ever getting on it. I gotta believe a shoulder mounted SAM is readily available on the black market - heck, they are using them in afghanistan.

They could sit on the free way and take it down at takeoff or landing. Imagine how THAT would shut down the air traffic.

I really hate flying any more - I really used to enjoy the experience - but not any more.

Stupid more than insane.

I would argue that there have been no additional attackes "in spite of" rather than "due to" the TSA.

Combined with my earlier statement about bombing a train, this might really make me sound like a conspiracy wacko or something...

I'm frankly amazed that we haven't been hit by some more major terrorist acts. Maybe I've seen too many episodes of 24. But if the terrorists really want to bomb us as much as we're led to believe, I'm amazed it hasn't happened more often.

Yeah, there was that failed attempt at Times Square a while back. But it seems like that was a half-assed attempt. I would think that any terrorist that knows what they are doing could drive a car or van full of explosives into Times Square at any time and blow themselves up. And there would be zillions of targets around the country where a van-full of explosives would kill tons of people, cause millions of dollars in damage, and cause incredible levels of panic, with very little risk of being caught ahead of time. For example, how much security would someone have to evade to drive a van full of explosives into the Lincoln Tunnel or over the Golden Gate Bridge? And like I said before, someone could easily carry a suitcase or two full of explosives onto a train bound for Grand Central Station. So why do we only seem to be concerned with people trying to attack airplanes? A bomb going off under Grand Central could kill hundreds, and shut down the entire NYC Subway system for eons. It wouldn't cause quite the level of destruction that we saw on 9/11. But it would be 100 times easier.

So yeah, maybe it's from watching too many TV shows, but I'm surprised this hasn't happened already...

To respond to my own post... I suppose part of the reason is that the plane itself can be a weapon, and thus the terrorist doesn't need any special equipment. On 9/11, apparently all it took were a few box cutters. Filling a van with explosives means somehow acquiring a van full of explosives. Maybe that's not easy to do. I have no idea. But if 24 has taught me anything, it's that every Middle Eastern, Mexican, and Russian person has a warehouse or self-storage shed full of C4.

I'm just kidding about that last part, of course. Maybe explosives aren't as easy to obtain as TV would lead us to believe. A van by itself can be a weapon and can mow down a person or two. But not to the level that would cause a national panic. And I think it would be very hard to turn a train into a weapon, except for the people already on the train.

I don't know. I guess I'm just not a criminal mastermind...

You just need the right motivation.

Smart terrorists and criminals are not standing in line at the airport. Some minimum wage slave has already put their stuff on the plane for them.

I really, really don't want to have my provacy invaded through a full body scanner or an invasive pat down. I get the invasive pat down when I visit the local prison, and that's enough for me. I don't know what I am going to do the next time I am supposed to fly. :(
