Background : We had a pretty warm Aug. & Sept. in CT this year. All my LR's seemed to finish in sunny, 80 degree weather and I struggled on the last few miles each time and once, even walked for 3/4 of a mile before the last 2 miles home . . . So, I was debating running the 1/2 or full, but decided since I did have the 20 milers, to just go run the full . . . every race, especially a marathon, did not have to be a PR. In a recent conversation in the Master's group, there was discussion on enjoying the race and smiliing throughout. So I tried this approach - just being happy to be there and running.

My personal assistant, my dad, picked me up bright and early. I was able to meet up with my friend, G, and met some Boomers : Pro, Hally, PBJ, the Beers . . . I missed McSolar though . . .

It was a beautiful day for a race. Start temp may have been around 45. I wasn't sure how to dress for it since it had been so warm here, I had picked out my favorite tank (cw-x in pink, of course). I decided to go with it and it worked out well. The finishing temps may have been in the mid-to-high 50's and sunny.

Right before the start, my dad gathered my excess clothes and G's. It's nice being able to stay warm until the last few minutes!

The pre start up had a 13 year old sing the national anthem. She did an incredible job!

During the first mile, I saw Pro and WRFB . . . WRFB was talking about how he ran the first mile too fast . . .I looked at my watch and it said 8:07 - not bad - but I failed to register the time it took to get over the start : 25 seconds . . . The next few were 7:29 and 7:40. I was trying to slow down, but I guess it wasn't working. It felt incredible to be running in such beautiful weather. So, I just said enjoy and have fun - but you may pay later, without a doubt! I cruised along through the 12 mile hitting splits between 7:44 and 7:59. My hip flexors started to get a little sore. The following miles, started to slow up some . . . hitting between 8:00 and 8:25 with a 7:36 thrown in there - must have been more down hill that mile. At about mile 18, my right knee/IT Band started bothering me. I stopped once to try to stretch it, but it did not help. At about mile 19, saw WRFB again with a few exchanges. Miles 22 & 23 were 8:26 & 8:29. Now, I had forgotten about my IT Band issue as my calves were starting to cramp some. I ran some with my feet flexed up to try to help . . . then struggled in the last 3 miles at 9:03, 9:06 and 9:05. It didn't both me that I was slowing down. I was enjoying the day and smiling at the crowd. The women in the crowd were very friendly as women runners went by and one exceptionally nice man! At the 26th mile marker, my son was there and ran along the side walk until the final turn. It was nice to have him there!

As I crossed the finish line, the man handing me my finisher's medal said, at least you can still smile. My response back was, yes, but unfortunately, I can't walk!

My husband, daughter and son came in to see me finish. After the race, we went Halloween costume shopping. Sorry I missed on the Boomer lunch . . .

Gun time : 3:33:09
Net time : 3:32:44

I ended up shaving 11 seconds off my PR.

Thanks for reading!

ETA - Hally, I remembered to look for you as I was turning on to Main St. . . but then after I turned, I forgot .

Pink, WTG on a great race and a PR !! We had some extra drinks ready for you but missed seeing you go by too between our phones ringing and our looking out for WRFB. Maybe next time we will get you to join in the Boomer festivities, in the meantime it was nice meeting you and your Dad. How cool that your son got to see you finish strong. It was a beautiful day for a race!!

Pink, how cool that running to enjoy the race also netted you a PR. Congratulations! Nice that you could meet several imaginary runners too.

Speaking of which, I have my suspicions that mcsolar does not exist, so you can't be faulted for not meeting him.

I hope you recover quickly.

Pink, I think you're far too modest about your running ability. You are very talented! Congratulations on the PR and I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed yourself.

millbot, mc does too exist. His real name is Ray O.F. Sunshine.

Pink!

Great day! I had no idea you PR'd! You had convinced me you were not ready. I knew I went out too fast so I was surprised, happy (annoyed? :^) to see you right behind me at the turn around and at the finish. Actually I was expecting you to pass in the last few miles. Excellent race for you!

Great day in Hartford. Yes, we missed you at lunch.
Congratulations on the PR, Pink! You are, indeed speedy. I'm glad the race conditions turned out to be so perfect, and that you got to meet several Kick and CR friends. It sounds like a very enjoyable marathon.
