Thanks to everyone for your service. I just want to share a story from late last night/early this morning.

I often find myself going out in the middle of the night to cover deployment ceremonies. Usually, I feel like I can't complain about missing some sleep when our soldiers are saying goodbye to their families for a year. But last night I was feeling a bit grumpy about one that started at 11:45, after a long day at work.

But when I got there I started chatting with an older man wearing a Vietnam Veteran tshirt. He told me with tears in his eyes that his son is in the unit that is deploying to Afghanistan in the morning. He made a flag with the unit insignia and had each soldier in the company sign it, and will fly it outside his house until his son comes home.

He introduced me to his brother, who is also a Vietnam vet. They both told me they didn't have this kind of support when they served so they know how important it is. They pointed out the son, who was cuddling his one week old baby and they were both so proud of him.

I left wishing I could do more for this veteran than just thank him and write a little story about him for the newspaper. And no longer grumpy about working.
