This thread is for runners who want to encourage each other in their efforts and possibly hold each other accountable.

Good morning and Happy New Year!

Check in! How's running going? How were your holidays?

I ran 10 miles the Saturday before Christmas since I knew I would be stuck on a plane on Sunday. That's my longest run in ages and it felt great. I think I averaged about a 9:30 pace but it's hard to tell since I don't have the use of my Coolrunning log.

We only skied three days during the week were gone and we had to take it easy the whole time. At first I was testing my knee but it turned out all of my running made the muscles around the knee strong enough so my partial ACL tear was not a problem. The rest of the time we skied with beginners and had to keep them on green slopes. Two of these were our sons so that wasn't as totally frustrating as it could have been. The boys made a lot of progress and will probably be ready to try a blue or two on the next trip. We skied at Red River, Angel Fire, and Taos. Taos is an amazing ski resort but definitely built for advanced skiers. We won't be going back there until the boys are more experienced.

I have new respect for both of you who run on snow and ice. I brought my warm running gear hoping to get a few runs in while I was gone. But the streets had ice everywhere and it would have been unsafe in my mizunos. The condos did not have a treadmill either. So my only exercise was skiing.

We went snowmobiling one day and it was too much like riding in a car to be my cup of tea. I thought I would get a little exercise but the machine does all the work. I rode with DS2 and accidentally tossed him off once. Luckily I tossed him in deep snow so he was hurt but I slowed down after that. He was a good sport about the whole thing.

I got home late Sunday and ran 4 on Monday and 5 on Tuesday -- including 12x.25
miles. I found a 4 week 5k training program here http://www.kickrunners.com/training/5k_advanced.pdf that I will try to following, though I can't run the paces suggested. We'll see how that goes.

Gripe -- I'm totally giving up on Active.com. I posted a reply to Bugs' post Saturday before leaving town for Christmas and got an error message that wouldn't let me post. It turns out the site went down for scheduled maintenance at 9 pm and they didn't bother to let anyone know before it happened. So it ate my post and wouldn't let me redo it. Grrrr.

Was wondering about you guys. Marathon Trainers has moved to runningahead.com and I'm still browsing on active.com. I'm going to have to get a second job so I can keep up with all the forums.

Mary, I have never mastered sking. The last time I skied I came inches away from doing a Sunny Bruno, have not skied since. Think it's pretty cool that you are able to sky with your boys. Let us know how that training plan works for you. I really need to get on a training plan but my life has been anti-plan lately.

I've had a cough and cold, and it's really put my running on hold. On top of it, my tendonities in my ankle is acting up. I had graston done on Monday, and have an impressive 8"x4" bruise on the side of my leg. All will be better in a couple of days.

I was on vacation for 1 1/2 weeks and called in sick today. I was so glad I sounded awful, because I feel like a first class lounger calling in sick. I personally hate when sick people come to work.

Hopeful sent me an e-mail with runningahead.com info. They have a log!!! I've spent about the last hour downloading my log and entering the runs since the coolrunning log ended. The log looks pretty good but I've got to get used to it.

Since Hopeful is at runningahead and you are there for your marathon forum, maybe we should put the Happy Hour thread over there. I like kickrunners but they don't have a log yet. They are working on one but I haven't seen any info. indicating when it will become available for use.

Your thoughts?

What is graston? I hope your cold is better soon. That's a rotten way to start the year.

On the skiing, did you ever take lessons? I took lessons the first two times I skied and so did the boys. I'm convinced they make all the difference in the world. But even without lessons, if you don't fall too much it's fun.

Oh yeah - totals! I ran 63.5 miles in December and that's with a week off for skiing. But my annual total is only 527.44. My injuries, especially the shin splints, really show in that total. Oh well. There's a very good chance 2008 will be better.

Welcome to you and your group!

The log is currently in beta testing mode. You can keep up with the status in the Running Log Forum.

The target date to have it up and available for use is within January. (Hopefully the middle of January.)

Oh, and if your group has at least 10 -15 people, we would be happy to set you up your own forum in the running clubs section.

If you have any questions, drop me a pm.

Mary,
RA will import your coolrunning log. My log is a mess, and I really need to clean it up. Considered doing it last night, but decided to work on taxes - 2006.

Never had sking lessons, I did get decent at it one year when we skied almost every weekend. I'd have to start over now. Don't think we'll try it till the boys are a little older. My 6 year old would love it though.

Graston is done by my chiropractor and he uses tools to break up the scar tissue that is causing your tendons and muscles not to function normally. They put some heating pads on you to loosen everything up, put some gel on you, and go digging with something that looks like a flat spoon. It hurts but it works, for shin splints too!

My leg has been bugging me from time to time and wanted to get it taken care of on this year's deductable. (LOL - like I won't have this year's met by March.)

I'm OK with moving or staying. I joined that challenge, and the winter 5% weight one so I'll be here anyway.

Despite my current hacking cough, and beat-up ankle, I think it's going to be a great year. If we're going to move, let's move and start a thread for 2008 goals so it's easy to reference.

Hi you guys!! I hope you consider moving over to runningahead - but I'll understand as this is a nice site too. Most of my other "threads" and buddies are over there though.

Here is my race report:

We almost didn't make it to this race as I got a bit lost trying to find the place!! But - we made it to the State Park in time, paid my $24 for an annual sticker, found a parking spot on a snow bank - thankful that I drove my 4 wheel drive truck and trotted over to the start line.

The temp was 27 degrees with a stiff wind out of the North plummeting the wind chill to a point that I'd rather not know what it was. Having been sick for the past couple of weeks, I really didn't have any goal other than to finish and start the New Year off on the right foot.

This was a simple out and back course on a flat road, but with the fresh snow fall, it was a bit like running in soft sometimes slippery sand. I just got in the back of the pack and tried to keep a steady pace. The first mile was 9:42 with 169 HR. This is faster than I have been running lately, so I thought I may need to slow down a tad. 2nd mile was 9:59 - 176 HR as we hit the turn around point at 1.5 miles and started to deal with the head wind. I have now spotted a familiar jacket that was ahead of me at the Trail Run in November. I thought if I could just run steady, I might be able to take her - always good to have a goal. About a quarter of a mile from the finish I took her and started to feel a bit sick to my stomach - in a sick sort of way I knew this was good because I was giving it all I had. Finished mile 3 with a 9:26 - 178HR. The last little sprint was mean as it went into the woods a bit and the snow was deeper and hard to run in. I was giving it all I had when the familiar jacket passed me!! DRATS!!

Other than red jacket passing me in the last sprint - I have to say it was quite enjoyable continually passing people throughout the whole race.

Finish time 30:18 - 8th in my Age Group out of 13.

Now I'm taking a bit of a hiatus trying to get rid of the cough. Michigan is suppose to have a warm spell, so I'll get back out there Saturday.

Thanks for all your support!!

We've moved. Here's our forwarding address: http://www.runningahead.com/groups/HappyHour
sierra - Thanks for the hospitality over the past few weeks. This is a very nice place but I have to follow my buddies.

ETA: Wow. That's really unfriendly. Someone deleted the forwarding address I posted.

I deleted the link Willmary. It wasn't intended as 'unfriendly'. I would have rather you asked permission before linking to another forum. I'm happy to leave the link for your group to find each other, but understand that other's have asked before posting a link to another running site.

best,
