From Marines.com:

During the American Revolution, many important political discussions took place in the inns and taverns of Philadelphia, including the founding of the Marine Corps.

A committee of the Continental Congress met at Tun Tavern to draft a resolution calling for two battalions of Marines able to fight for independence at sea and on shore.

The resolution was approved on November 10, 1775, officially forming the Continental Marines.

As the first order of business, Samuel Nicholas became Commandant of the newly formed Marines. Tun Tavern’s owner and popular patriot, Robert Mullan, became his first captain and recruiter. They began gathering support and were ready for action by early 1776.

Each year, the Marine Corps marks November 10th with a celebration of the brave spirit which compelled these men and thousands since to defend our country as United States Marines.

Shadow38 and anyone else who has a loved one in the military:

I have my kids write letters of appreciation to the members of our military every year for Veteran's Day. Usually I have a student with an aunt/dad/etc. who is currently serving who we send the letters to... but this year we don't. (No one who is active, anyway.)

If you have a loved one currently serving with a troop who might like to receive these letters, please PM me the address/contact info. There is a Air National Guard Armory across the street from my house that I will drop the letters off to if no one messages me, but I'd rather send the letters to those people currently serving (outside the US?). Thanks!

Thank you and Happy Birthday to the Marines, especially, today. My grandfather and my close friend FXC are never far from my thoughts...

I wonder how my Marine (DS) will celebrate. He's on a ship somewhere between the Middle East and the Pacific.

That's where my brother (USMC) is too. Wonder if they're on the same ship?

Thanks for the offer Solar. His mail is pretty hit and miss but I sure appreciate the offer. That's a great thing that you do with the letters.
Tim - he's either on the USS Pearl Harbor or USS Dubuque. He thought he'd be on the Pearl Harbor for the return trip.

Thanks to your son for his service. We'll pray for continued safety for all of our troops around the world.
