Okay all, here is first the Person of the Day thread... Marathon Princess and I had not forgotten! The list of people that signed up is set forth below. The thread will get a little unwieldy if we post the entire list every day, etc. However, some of you may not have seen the other threads on this and may want in. If so, we'll simply add you to the list. Marathon Princess and I worked on the questions some, but we do not assert they are "perfect". If there is a question that should have been asked, please ask it, and we can revise the list for future participants. If you participate and there is a question you don't want to answer, don't answer it. If you want to interpret a question in a different way, go for it. This is intended to be fun!

When your day comes up, you should post the questions and your answers. That is, don't wait for me or someone else to start your POTD thread for you. Whether these become sticky-worthy I will leave to Grizz....

I have attached dates to the names of the participants. Some people travel or will not be able to make their date. Hopefully, we can adjust that through the use of some PMs.

1. Why do you run?

I ran in High School, but only as training for other sports. I never really thought of it as a sport on its own. In my mid-20's, I had put on a few pounds and was single. I ran some to try and lose some weight and to be more attractive to the opposite sex (I don't think that worked). Anyway, in my mid-30's, I had put on more than a few pounds. I was 40 or 50 pounds overweight (I'm 6'2" and was 240). In January 2005 I decided to get back to my driver's license weight (225). I did that in about 2 weeks and didn't feel or look much different. In fact, I changed my goal and decided to lose weight until I received a compliment or at least a comment from someone who sees me regularly. Well, the comments and compliments started coming, but I decided to get down to what I considered a good weight for me. I decided that would be in the 180's. I was using running as my primary exercise. I lost the 50 pounds in about 4 or 5 months. and was running a lot. In October of that year, I rant the Maine Marathon (4h11m15s). I was pretty damn proud of myself.

2. What is your greatest accomplishment?

Professionally: Passing the bar exam on the first try.
Personally: Raising two happy and well-adjusted great kids (they're only 7 and 4, but I consider my part in raising them to be a great accomplishment!)
Physically: Probably my four marathons, and PRing each time (my current PR is 3h31m45s which I ran at the Ottawa Marathon in May 2007).

3. What is your motto/theme song?

I don't know that this really fits the category, but I really liked Jimmy Valvano's "Don't ever give up" speech (the following is cut from the Wikipedia entry for Jimmy V)...

"Don't give up. Don't ever give up." During his speech, the teleprompter stated that he had 30 seconds to which Valvano responded, "They got that screen up there flashing 30 seconds, like I care about that screen. I got tumors all over my body and I'm worried about some guy in the back going 30 seconds." His speech has become legendary, and he closed the speech by saying, "Cancer can take away all of my physical abilities. It cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart, and it cannot touch my soul. And those three things are going to carry on forever. I thank you and God bless you all." One thing Valvano also said in the speech that many remember most are the following words:

To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number 1 is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number 2 is think. You should spend some time in thought. And Number 3 is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special."
4. How do you deal with bad runs?

By knowing that there will be good runs to follow. I try not to dwell on the bad ones. I figure even a bad five mile run is 5 miles I put on my shoes, 5 miles I put on my running log, and 5 miles in the bank of experience.

5. Do you reward yourself for good runs? How?

Sure. I run enough (it varies between 30-60 miles per week) that I basically eat whatever I want. Also, I am a gear freak. Name a tech shirt or gadget... I either own it or probably made the decision not to buy it because I already have something like it!

6. Who do you admire most?

Professionally Probably my Father. I'm not suggesting he was the greatest lawyer of all time. I admire him because he had a great balance between personal and professional life. He could leave work at the office and not talk about work at home. He also had a great number of clients that are now clients of mine. They regularly comment on what a great guy my Father is and how much they enjoyed working with him. I want people to enjoy working with me.
Athletically Cal Ripken, Jr. Yeah, he wasn't the greatest baseball player of all time, but boy did he make the most of his skills.

7. What is the greatest advice you have ever received?

Professionally If you have a client that needs to be called, and you don't want to make the call for whatever reason (you have bad news to deliver, you are going to get chewed out, etc.), make the call. Return every call you receive within 24 hours of receiving it and, if you have made a mistake, 'fess up. These have served me very well over the years.

Personally See the whole Jimmy V thing, above.

8. What do wish you had learned younger?

To make the most of every day. Not to take things for granted. How to get off the couch and to go outside.

9. What do you wish you could do but can't?

Fly.

10. How would your friends describe your personality?

Outgoing, focused, smart, funny, annoying on occasion, offensive on occasion, but all-around a pretty good guy.

11. What do you wear running? favorite outfit?

I generally wear shorts and a tech tee shirt. I like the expensive Kayano low cut socks. I also like expensive shoes (generally Kayanos for street running). I almost always wear a running hat (my hair is about 1/8" long, and I wear glasses. The hat keeps sweat out of my eyes and off my lenses).

12. What has been your favorite race?

Probably the 2006 Chicago Marathon. I feel horrible for the 2007 participants. The weather for 2006 was great for runners... perhaps a little cool and windy for the last three miles. It was great because it was so huge and so first class compared to all other races I'd done. A great experience. Also, I PR'd my time down to 3:35:XX, which made me feel like I was getting fast...

13. Do you have a goal race right now?

No. I need one. My most recent goal race was the VT50. I had shin problems and bailed (DNS). I think I may pick a few half marathons and a marathon for the spring....

14. What makes you happy?

In no particular order: my kids; my family, my friends, running, the Baltimore Orioles (funny, they also frustrate the hell out of me), the Montreal Canadians, books, music, certain foods and drinks, certain successes at work, and travel.

15. Tell us one interesting thing about you that you haven't said (at least not often) on this forum in the past.

I have a tattoo of a Baltimore Oriole on my left hip.

16. Tell us one interesting thing about another user of this forum that has not been posted (at least not often) on this forum in the past (make sure the other person will not object to posting the info!).

Hmmm...This is a tough one. Gingerbread and her SO have bee hives. That is probably widely known. Damn.

If you're still reading, how'd I do?

Well, this will confirm for a lot of you that Vermont is full of hicks:

I handled a "reverse pulsation" case that dealt with the milking equipment used to milk cows. We had an expert witness from Wisconsin and had Vets testify about the effects of reverse pulsation on cows, etc. It was hotly contested. We asked the Jury to award $324,000. They awarded $350,000! It was very satisfying! Weeks and weeks of preparation and a four day trial with the jury giving us more than we asked... The defense paid, no appeal. Talk about a happy client!

BTW, I typically handle real estate, corporate issues, estate planning, etc. You know, boring (but generally happy and non-litigious) stuff.

Thanks for the interest!

MP: The Habs have always been my team! Even through some of these recent bad years...

Running a race in Montreal is a definite possiblity. Also, VT seems like one I should run!

I was born in DC. My dad was finishing law school at Georgetown. When he graduated, we moved to VT. I was four months old. I rode up here sitting in my great uncle's lap. No seat belt, not car seat, etc. That was May 1969.

I've been here ever since (except I went to college and law school out of state).
