Why do you run?

I always wanted to run but I smoked and had no lung capacity for it. When I quit in January 2002 I tried it and to my surprise I could do it so I kept it up. After surgery to remove a tumor in my lung in 2006 (and my upper right lobe along with it) it is really hard again but I keep plugging away because I am grateful to still be able to no matter how slow. Every once in a while I have one of those sproinky runs and that’s what keeps me at it.
2. What is your greatest accomplishment?
I don’t think I have accomplished it yet.
3. What is your motto/theme song?
If you wait for someone to do it with you won’t ever get out the door./ Do what you want to do, go where you want to go.
4. How do you deal with bad runs? Lately most of my runs are pretty bad, just another day for me.
5. Do you reward yourself for good runs? How?
The good run is reward in itself. It lifts my spirits and gives me hope for more.
6. Who do you admire most?
People who, despite great odds achieve their goals. By that I mean physical disabilities or limitations, or great hardships in their lives. So many people take health and sound body for granted. It’s a gift we should all be thankful for everyday. Ditto having the wherewithal to live in relative comfort.
7. What is the greatest advice you have ever received?
If you want something from someone ask for it. The worst that can happen is they say no. If you want something in life go for it. The worst that can happen is you fail.
8. What do wish you had learned younger?
I am not indestructible.
9. What do you wish you could do but can't?
Teleport
And apparently according to MS Word make a sentence that isn’t fragmented.
10. How would your friends describe your personality?
I’m a Gemini so a big contradiction. I am outgoing but very private. I am generous sometimes and other times cheap as they come. Independent to a fault.
11. What do you wear running? favorite outfit?
Nothing exciting here. Loose “tights” and wicking tops with a windbreaker unless it’s below freezing then I add a fleece jacket. Gloves usually come off after a mile, ditto earwarmers. Summer and spring, Coolmax top and bottom, visor or baseball cap and sunglasses if needed. OH, SUNSCREEN ALWAYS. Saucony Trigon Ride’s are the shoes of choice right now.
12. What has been your favorite race?
I haven’t raced that much but one that I do every year and have fun doing is the 4 mile Snowflake run in my town in February. I used to enjoy the JPMorgan Chase challenge in Jones Beach but they discontinued running it there.
13. Do you have a goal race right now?
Not really, still trying to get my mileage back up.
14. What makes you happy?
Riding my road bike with my bike club buddies is at the top of the list right now for exercise. I love hiking in the woods and looking for Geocaches. Travel is right up there, especially somewhere new.
I enjoy sharing a good meal and a bottle of wine or some beers with friends. Meeting up with folks I have met on these message boards at racing events. Even though I am not up to racing in them I go anyway. I feel like a marathon groupie.
15. Tell us one interesting thing about you that you haven't said (at least not often) on this forum in the past.
When I was a little girl I wanted to change my name to Sybil.

To lose part of a lung, and still keep running, is just amazing.

It was nice to learn a few more things about one of my favorite moderators. I'm really glad to hear you are still enjoying your new road bike. P.S. I'm in the same boat with sentence fragments. Sheesh! Thanks for being our POTD.

Hi HallyBardSybill,

Great post! It's so true that we who don't have all the body parts we started with are appreciative of what we have and what we can do. I imagine losing a piece of lung makes running especially challenging. I tip my cap to you!

Hi Hally, I really admire your running inspite of your difficulties with your lungs, you are an inspiration. The Geocache thing is interesting, I have studied a local cacher who owns the Grubstake restaurant who is big on puzzles and has some interesting challenges that I would like to try someday.

Great POTD, thanks. Larry

Hey when I wanted to be Sybil I am not even sure I knew how to spell the name so it might have been Cybyl. I was really little then

Hey Barb - I was very impressed when you sent in your little spotlight VRAA questionnaire and mentioned the lung loss. It's hard enough to get fit with both lungs fully functional - you're definitely someone from whom to draw inspiration.

Thanks for a great POTD post!

I didn't know about the lung problem.
And thanks for being our moderator.
