Hola! Man, I really wish I could find a half marathon that started at 9 or 10 in the morning! This getting-up-at-3am stuff bites! Anywho.. I'm certainly not expecting to do my best on the event, but last night I remembered that my heath right now is still better than what a lot of other people have - so with that in mind, I'll run the best that I can today.

(holy run-on-sentence, Batman!)

Best of luck to our other racers today. Shake a leg, people!

I am right there with you, Ailarie. Up early for a half. It is an inaugural race (with a full and a 10K) and is sold out. It starts at 7:45, but I will need to leave here around 6:30 to make sure I can park and get to the line on time. I look forward to virtually racing with you this morning - good luck and have fun! It is 40 degrees and perfect out here! I am not expecting a PR either, but I'd like to stay under 1:45. Fingers crossed.

I had crappy sleep and cRaZy dreams - some of which were race-anxiety related. For example, at one point I was late and trying to get to the start (which had already started) and had to climb through a huge caged area with lots of different types of alligators. Oh yeah, and I was barefoot because I didn't know where my shoes were. Ultimately I saw myself cross the timing mat - and I admit it was weird watching myself run. But it wasn't all running - there were a lot of crazy cats (and kittens) in my house and some unidentified family member was bringing people in to show our house to sell it while we were all sleeping.. Good times in the mind of mindi on crazy sleep nights....

Happy Saturday, peeps!

Good morning, ladies. Ailarie, that's way too early to wake up. I don't know how you can be expected to function at a race if you can't get a decent night's sleep.

My 5k doesn't start until 9:45. But I'm up anyway. Well, it's past my usual wake-up time, so I guess this counts as "sleeping in"...

Agree. That's too early for a half marathon rising time. Good luck at your HM Ailarie and Mindi! You ladies will rock it.

Go get that AG prize again at your 5k boB!

I'm doing a 5k that starts at 10:00. Its put on by my DD's CC team. It'll actually be on grass, which will be different for me and should be interesting since it's full of frost (though by 10:00 it should all be gone). I'm still trying to decide if I'm going to wear a costume so I get a prize, since I don't usually have a chance at AG prizes!

Good morning all,

Good luck racers (all of whom should either be racing now or be done racing now).

I met up with my group for a great two part run. Wade and I did 5 miles at 5:00am then circled back to the running store to meet up with 6 other buddies. We then did a 12.5 mile loop. So, I ended up with 17.8 miles in 2:26 or so. My legs have the not so fresh feeling now.

Busy day ahead: Fall Festival at P's school, L's soccer game, Adult + kids halloween party and then Trick-or-treat in the neighborhood where the party is held.

Luck ladies!!! And boB!

We're talking about making crust this morning so we can make pizza later. Guess that means I should caramelize some onions too.

Uh.... Butt tape, crushing walnuts, 4 miles by myself, and then 1.25 with Gus. Jeez, he launched as soon as we got down to the driveway and kept up a gallop pretty much the whole way. Made him much more calm for brushing him out on the deck when we got back.

When we went inside Jack was sitting on the rug looking all pathetic, and Dh said he cried the whole time we were gone. "Equal time please mom," he says to me, and guilts me into taking Jackasaurus for a walk too. Just a short one, because it's cold. But now I have two happy dogs.

Back home from my race. This was a little bigger than last week's race. Last week was 187 people. This one was maybe 350-400.

But no AG award. Last week's race split the AGs into 5-year increments. Even though this one was twice as big, it split into 10-year increments. And I came in 4th place in M30-39. Had they done 5-year, I would've been second in M35-39. But oh well.

My time was 21:19, which is almost half a minute faster than last week. But still almost half a minute off a PR.

Oh well, it was still fun...

Nice job, Bob! And good luck Cindi! Ailarie, I hope the half went well.

I kicked my race in the @ss!! WOOOOOO HOOOOO! Seriously, you guys have no idea how much I needed that. I was pretty concerned about having a crap race, so I went out nice and conservatively. Ended up with a big negative split, with the latter miles in the 7:20s and 7:30s. Oh, and the final stretch was at a 5:48 pace!!! Finished with 1:39:48, which was good for an age group win! Take that 1:45 goal! Still a good 3 minutes off my PR, but I felt great the whole time, finished really strong, and am smiling from ear to ear. The finisher medal is a cool skull and cross bones too. We are heading up to Capitol Brewery at 2:00 pm for lunch and awards. Oh, did I mention: WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOO!!! (okay, enough over-celebrating).

Mindi! That is awesome. Fast!!! Congrats!

boB - nice work! 21:19 is speedy.

Way to get out there Kath and Tim. Now go enjoy the day!

I decided 5ks suck. They hurt too much. The one I did was a cross country one - hilly and on grass. Wasn't a ton of people, so I still managed to be 3rd place female with a time of 24:4x something, I think. Uggg. It hurt. Got 4 miles done before it,so finished the day with 7 miles. Off to the mall to shop now!

Rehi, everyone

Bob - Good race, even without the hardware!

RIL - woohoo girlfriend! Atta way to attack it!

Me: Meh! Good news is that even with the lingering crud, today was my 2nd best time on a hm. Even better (sorta) news is that my first 6 miles were literally my best 10k pace. You can guess how that translates into the bad news - major crash and burn in the latter miles. Not because of cardio fatigue, but my upper (way upper - almost to the hip) quads and upper hamstrings were very unhappy. I'm guessing with the faster pace, I'm lengthening my stride without really thinking about it, and in doing so, those muscle sections not normally worked are put into overdrive.

I'm guessing that leaves me with three options: (1) learn how to fracking pace myself decently to run a more even pace for the duration (2) find some exercise specific to building those muscle sections up, or (2) /sigh. Start incorporating speedwork into training. Any tips on the 2nd or 3rd would be welcomed!

Oh.. and as far as getting up THAT early? It's a combination of a few things. I like to be early, but I had never been to this event before. It was at least an hour away, and I have a very small frame of time where I can actually see to drive clearly in the dark (via use of Rx eyedrops). So.. less traffic = a safer drive for me. I figured I could snooze in my car if need be once I got there.

Hi Everyone!

I've been reading all week, but have problems from time to time posting on the site--it's a funky password thingee.

I have also been sick since about Wed night with a really cruddy throat thing. I kept thinking it would become a cold and didn't; instead I lost my voice which made more than a few people happy. Haven't run a step since Wed due to on/off fever. Hopefully a bit tomorrow--I'm starting to get craaabbbbyyy.

(((Litch's foot)))). How's the legs Lora and Duckie?

GREAT racing and running!! Bob, Mindi, Alarie! Mindi--did you do the mud run? One of my friends from HS and his company organized the event, so I'm curious about what you thought. He wants to take over some other midwest running events that he feels aren't organized well.

How are you feeling Mr. Marathonmaniac, KP?

I saw Jill ran 24 today!!

RTFL--that wasn't one for a local CC ski club was it? If so, I've done it and that one is really flippin' hard, but fun!

B&B I think were doing a 1/2 today...right? Or Baggs was? I could be wrong.

I'm signed up for a little 10k next week. We will see. Gotta feel better first.

Congrats Cindi and Ailarie! I agree 5Ks suck. People constantly tell me I should be able to run 5K a lot faster than I do, but I can't. Bob - that is super fast - just ahead of my PR (which, incidentally, I haven't come close to in a LONG time). Ailarie - I echo Kath - that is awesome!

Check out my A/G award from today:

Final results came up and I was 14th woman out of 610. Not too shabby!

Craney - the mud run is tomorrow - I'll let you know how it goes. Who is your friend? Ryan G? I think I know most of the organizers pretty well. Small world.

Cheers.

Hmmm, I actually don't know Russ. Is he with Race Day Events?

Hey, check this out: Today, my bib # was 923. Tomorrow, my bib# for the mud run is also 923. What are the chances? A good omen, no? I think James and I are going to have a great time. He already told me he needed to go to bed early to get ready for his race. Attaboy.

Howdy all - well, the Warrior Dash was a blast. I didn't realize how big an event this was until I got there - quite a crowd with waves going off from 12 noon to 5 pm, sometimes in 15-minute increments

Never done anything where I had to worry about using strength as well as cardio-fitness, so I figured I'd just settle into what felt like a good pace I could hold and go from there - as I got to the mile mark, I started passing the folks who were obviously doing this for fun and went out too fast but really didn't have too much run training in the books.

Out of the obstacles, the first one was the most tricky one and not mentioned on the website - leaping over four autos parked lengthwise across our path set about 6 feet apart. Considering I barely landed my foot on top of the hood on the first car with a full running start and since I have little in the way of vertical leap anyway, I did the smart thing and kinda' pinwheeled over the hood to the other side on the next three. The cargo net was also a little tricky at first (I imagine as the bulk of people came to this, it would get even more so) with it swaying so much, but I got through that okay.

The other obstacles ranged from ridiculously easy (the hay bales, the plank walk) to not as hard as I thought it would be (the warrior rope web, the wall traversings) to the just get through them ASAP types (the tunnel crawl, the hill sprint, the tire high-step) to the fun (the slip-n-slide, the fire leap.)

The last one was the mud pit, and my dive in there wasn't so graceful (see picture below.) What I and many others didn't know was that the bottom was lined with generous helpings of Mainway Toys' "Bag O' Glass". Well, not really, but I got a serious case of road rash on my left forearm and a nice gash on my left elbow, with a minor sampling of both those on the right. I saw one gal in the first aid tent who sliced her knee pretty good going thru that pit.

Still, though, this was a helluva' lot of fun, and I'd recommend it if it comes to your neighborhood. I didn't see too many people in front of me at the finish line. I have no idea about results, but as far as I can tell, the last time I was passed was on the cargo net, and then I picked him and a lot of others off (even some stragglers from the 1:30 PM wave) throughout the 3+ miles of run + obstacles. Can't beat a bunch of mud-caked people with smiles on their faces.

Some pictures - first, how the fire pit looked like

This isn't me, but this is more than likely how I looked like before I hit the mud

Finally, this is me (rinsed off a bit - there was no way I was going to handle my camera and cell phone and cake it with mud and stuff)

Didn't want to not give props to our racers - awesome job boB (I think that's even a better result than your other race considering the bigger field), Mindi (woot! nice comeback race and nice prize; good luck on your Mud Run tomorrow!) and Ailarie (way to rock that HM despite the respiratory stuff)!

And good job getting out there and at 'em - you all deserve a big
