As some of you are aware, I'm not particularly fond of Delta Airlines. But I did fly them from Atlanta to Ft. Lauderdale last Saturday for a cruise. I was scheduled to return to Atlanta tonight leaving FLL at 7:00pm to arrive back in Atlanta around 9:00pm, also on Delta.

But when I checked in for my flight at a Delta kiosk at FLL around noon, they offered me a 2:00pm flight for a $50.00 change fee. And they assigned me an exit row seat free of additional charges. I had more leg room than any first class passenger did. It was a great flight and I got home at a decent hour.

Not ready to take Delta over Southwest but they did good today. I actually enjoyed giving them that extra $50.00.

A couple of years ago I was looking at flying from Portland (OR) to Raleigh. Delta had two flights that left about the same time - one non-stop to Atlanta, and one that connected in Salt Lake City to another flight to Atlanta. The second schedule was significantly cheaper than the first, and both were cheaper than anyone else, so I booked us through SLC.

About two weeks later I get an email from Delta telling us that there's been a change in our schedule. We were now on the non-stop flight - which was the flight we would have preferred anyway.

I flew home from Orlando yesterday on Delta, connecting through ATL. Go figure. They had overbooked both filghts. It wasn't an issue for me, since I had had a seat purchased months in advance, but I'm sure that if I was one of the standbys, I wouldn't have been happy. Some got left at the gate. But, that happens. Delta is not unique when it comes to overbooking flights.

They asked me if I wanted to volunteer to relinquish my seat, and, in hindsight, I sort of wish I had. I arrived home at 3:45 in the afternoon. If I had given up my seat, I would have gotten home at 10:30 in the evening, but also would have gotten a voucher for a free flight. Still not sure why I didn't do it.

Since it was so crowded, they did also ask for volunteers to check their carry ons for free, and I did go for that one. My carry on was heavy as hell, and carting it all around the three airports I was in from terminal to terminal would have been uncomfortable (as it was on the way down).

In ATL, they once again overbooked the flight and asked for volunteers. I declined on that one too, since if I had taken it, I would probably still be down there, since the next flight didn't leave until this morning. Wonder if they would have put me up in a hotel in addition to the free flight.

Anyway, I have always flown Delta, and, aside from the $25 checked baggage fee, I've never really had an issue with them.

Regarding carry on luggage. I understand why more and more people do that now, because of the fee to check luggage, and you don't have to wait in the baggage claim, but it really does tick me off what people consider "carry on" luggage. The FAA has some pretty simple to understand requirements, 22 x 14 x 9. And I'd bet that half of the luggage I saw on those planes did not meet those requirements. And, Delta (excpet for the overbooked flights, because they mentioned it specifically that they would be checking sizes) didn't seem to be checking either.

It's not hard.

a) you could use a ruler, which is what I did before I even left my house. Rulers, or, better yet, tape measures, are pretty easy to figure out how to work

b) you could use the nice, convenient little box that they have at the ticketing booth, and at all the gates Your luggage fits in there, its OK. If it doesn't, it's not OK.

Delta just emailed me a survey for my FLL to ATL flight. I filled it out and gave them excellent ratings in all facets of the survey. As much as I've complained to them in the past they may frame my survey response. I could not have been more pleased with Delta Saturday.

Due to their bag fees I probably will still take Southwest on my next cruise leaving from Galveston in April. But I was very impressed with Delta Saturday.

I just got the survey. Although it was specifically slanted to the fact that I was on a sold out flight. I still gave them all "A"s...although I had a guaranteed seat on both flights, I could tell they were doing everything they could to accommodate the people who did not.
