I'm watching "The Longest Day," the greatest war movie of all time. I don't think anyone would argue against calling "The Godfather" the greatest gangster movie of all time. Some might call it the best movie period. But can you pick a "greatest movie" for other genres?

The greatest western of all time? And the greatest romantic comedy of all time? Comedy? Action movie? Scary movie? Other genre?

Are there generally accepted "best" in these genres?

I'm with you on the musical. Apocalypse Now was a good anti-war movie, but I can't stand movies about the military where the soldiers are portrayed as nutjobs. I think you can make a movie about the insanity of war without making the soldiers insane. Like Hamburger Hill.
Greatest Western: She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
Greatest Romantic Comedy: When Harry Met Sally
Greatest Comedy: History of the World Part 1
Doesn't it seem like everything made in the last 10 years is a rehash of something that came before? There seems to be very little new coming out of hollywood.

"Best" is tough. That's what I was getting at. Most people agree on The Godfather as the best of it's genre. I think there are very few movies you can argue top their genre.

But that's not going to stop any of us from doing it...
