Hm. I went into this 5K portion of the duathlon just thinking I'd do better than last year. Last year I still hadn't mastered that whole "run-3 miles-in-a-row" thing.

This year, I can do the distance, but I have a wee quad injury. The quad issue is not enough to make me go a lot slower, but I have been taking it easy for the most part since it happened. I did run a slow 5 miles on Friday, and there was some walking in there. The pace overall was 11:26 for that 5 Miles on Friday.

So, get up at 6:00am, put on the running duds and have some coffee and oatbran cereal for breakfast. Leave at 7:30am for the 1.5 hour drive to the race location. Arrive approx 9:15am. Meet up with my duathlon partner (a coworker) who is biking 12 miles. We chit-chat and do small things to get ready. The run is first at 10:00am. The runners line up and we're chatting amongst ourselves at the back as I anticipate my pace will be around 10:00 to 10:30 or so.

I was chatting with the wife of an acquaintance, she was a bit nervous for some reason, and I told her "just don't start out too fast" because that's what I was going to try to do.

We're off! Nice even pace, but I feel like I'm going a bit fast so a slow it down a skoshe (sp?), a few people pass me, and I pass a few. I settle in next to a nice lady who is just interested in finishing. We joke around about "drafting" since the bikers were told they couldn't but no one said the runners couldn't. One woman comes up and passes us, running easy and she had the smoothest stride. We complimented her on it. She seemed to think it was funny but she was running well.

Another woman passed us, we said "good job" but got no response. I thought maybe she didn't hear us. My acquaintance's wife was ahead of me, and running pretty well, but starting to slow down. She did go out a little bit fast. I pass her before the turn-around on the out and back course.

It was great to see all the fast people! They were going really well, and with temps in the mid 50s on a cloudy day, almost everyone thought the weather was perfect for running. Silent woman high-fived someone she knew going the other way. I kept my eye on here because she passed us, but didn't pull very far away.

Hit the turn around and head back. I'm running a bit faster now and it's easier, although I have to keep holding back because I know I won't last if I don't. I pass silent woman. I pull up right behind smooth strider but no matter what I do I am not able to pass her. I think she hears me panting and is able to judge where I am by that.

Round the last corner and I can see the finish line. Silent woman passes me! There's not much time and I'm sucking wind. Screw the quad, that bi-atch isn't going to cross the finish line before me! I kick it and pass her about 4 steps before the finish line. Hah! I am tuckered and sucking wind big time, but I didn't lose to Silent Woman. That makes me feel good. I forget to stop my watch. My SO comes over and says "I thought she had you beat, but you really picked up the pace in the end." He thinks my time is 29:0-something. Official time 29:16. Last year's time was 32:03. Acquaintance's wife finishes in 31:01, she had to walk a bit on the way back, but was happy overall. She's been struggling with shin splints lately. ETA: The most peculiar thing after the race at the post-race food, etc. table there was no water. I didn't see any water anywhere, and that's all I wanted. ? Maybe I missed it.

My quad hurts today. It was worth it.

Nice job kicking Silent Woman's ass AND scoring an excellent PR. Great run!
Oh, sorry. My partner did his 12 Miles in 35:39.4 for an overall total of 1:04:55.9. He was 7 seconds slower than last year, but last year was super windy. Perhaps he had a helping tailwind
