Well the last 10 weeks or so have lead up to this. Race Day for the Grand Rapids Marathon Relay. I am on a team of 5 and we each ran a section between 4-6 miles. My team consists of 3 folks from out of town... Amy, Amy2, and Lori... and one colleague from work... Dawn.

In truth this was a weekend event. Another friend from stayed with us for the race day. We met with many other folks for a lovely Italian dinner at a local restaurant. We had nice meal and made new friends.

Race Day started early with a meeting at 7:10am. This is the first year that the race ran relay teams and there were logistics to deal with. I met up with Dawn and we talked about times and strategies. I climbed aboard the bus and Dawn headed off to the start line.

The morning was cool (~34F). The ride out to the exchange point was uneventful except for a sighting of the young man who was walking the entire marathon on stilts. Very cool. Dawn was a speedy little runner and got through her 6 miles in ~49minutes. She handed off the chip and I was off!

I wasn't too cold really and the movement really helped. I was able to take off the face shield I use to warm my breath pretty quickly. The first mile was too fast... 11:01! I slowed down a bit in 2, 3, and 4... averaging ~11:30 per mile. Somewhere in here I saw K and our friend who was running with him! Such a boost to be able to hear my name said with enthusiasm and see a friendly face.

During mile 4 I noticed that I had slowed a bit and picked it up for mile 5... 11:19! Only 0.8 miles to go and the crowd was wonderful - they had really picked up in number and volume. Before I knew it the relay was done... too soon. I made the hand off to Amy and she was off for her own version of the excitement.

I felt so energized afterward. I wanted more, I wanted longer, I wanted to keep this feeling.

5.8 miles, 1:06:16 for an average pace of 11.23 per mile.
