I ran the Grand Rapids Half on 10/28/2007, along with a slew of other Kickrunners. Some of us went out for dinner the night before - it was fabulous (both the food and the company).

Roughly two weeks before the race, I decided to sign up for the half marathon. I've been gradually building up mileage since rehabbing a hip/back injury, but was in no way in what I would consider good shape. Knowing that, I kept my goal(s) realistic.

At the outset, my goal for the race was 2 hours. I went out toward the back of the pack, and had sort of settled into a 9:00 pace by mile 1, and was within +/- 5 seconds of that through mile 10. Around mile 7 or 8, I decided that I was going to go for 1:55. I was very surprised that I felt good at mile 10, and decided to go for broke the last 5k.

My Garmin had me at 1:52:05 at the finish, so I ended up running a relatively decent 5k to finish out the HM.

Great course, great weather. And great beer at the finish!

Important detail I forgot: I wore my infamous orange mittens!!!!!!
