So my neighbors own the sweetest female golden retriever, She is gentle and lovey and just a great dog. They tend to let her out loose in their yard and she occasionally meanders over her ( as do their chickens) ...

The other morning I thought I would be a nice mom and clean up the stuff from the back packing trip my son did with his dad. I washed the really smelly clothes and socks, I hung the sleeping bag out to air.. and I put his very nice, rather expensive Merrill hiking boots out on the deck to dry. He finally got new boot last fall with his Scout account money ( they earn cash by working trash detail at the Nascar races ) Yesterday I notice there is only ONE boot sitting there.. Hmm . I look around to make sure my dog Louie hadn't taken it .. no... I called my neighbor agreed that most likely their Belle was the bandit! /

(^^ Not actually Belle.. merely a simulation)

I just went out and walked around my yard and theirs.. and found it.. In the LAST place I looked .. Ironically.

It was just halfway between the two yards, just into the long grass, under the limb of a big pine! Much relief..

I like my neighbors and the loss of a pair of not cheap boots could have been awkward, as I had no real proof but we all know that this has happened before ... Bell is a klepto.

I will remember to put my items up at "Belle-proof " height to dry from now on

Not with Goldens. But, must say its a VERY GOOD thing my little hound dog is so stinkin' cute. Bugger snagged fresh out of the oven bread off the kitchen island the other day. Lucky for him, big sister Pyrenees tattled. That bark means only one thing, so I went running to see what the hound was up to. All three loaves ended up on the floor, only one had a bite mark.

Ooooo Theiving fresh mad bread is enough to put anyone in the dog house.

I wish Torque was around . He always had a good USB dog story to tell... !

The only thing Louie really likes to rip up is foam pads and stuffed animals.. but only those belonging to DD. .. she has more patched and sewed together earless animals than is right!

Mine is on a underwear kick:(... The bad part is that he has learned to hide things in his mouth. Like all winter he would hide his own poop... (usually after he had something good the night before) ...and try to come back in the house with it. I usually got the sign that his clenched mouth ,meant poop inside. Well, today he must of used the technique to get my chewed panties that I had thrown in the garbage ...outside. son comes in early am. " um mom...There are pieces of your underwear all over the yard"

My collie dog used to love to chew the faces off of stuffed animals. Especially beanie babies. Do you have any idea just how many beans there are in a beanie baby? Or just how far those stupid beans roll on hardwood floors?!

Worst beanie baby destruction... Son3 had a favorite which he called "famous kitten". I think he meant "favorite", but whatever. It was "famous kitten". We got back late on Thanksgiving night. Lovingly carried the kids from the car and tucked 'em into bed. Hubby and I had just settled on the couch when we heard a blood curdling scream. Sigh... collie had chewed the face off famous kitten. Not to worry! We'll send it to Santa's workshop and his elves can fix it! We figured a simple trip to the toy store and we'd just replace the stupid thing. NOPE! Scrat was a limited edition, no longer available. We did find one on ebay. Son3 took one look at it and knew it wasn't his and didn't want it. Damned kid!

Powie's big thing is to stick his head in the trash can, grab anything he can and sprint off with it in hope of generating a chase scene. Sometimes I oblige him just for the hell of it, ususally i ignore him and he gets bored with his prize.

Having lived with 3 Goldens at various times, I can tell you:

1) They will grab stuff. They like to collect socks, underwear, slippers, and the occasional shoe. They're just living up to the retriever part.

2) They know they can get away with it because they're so damn charming and pure BSers.

Goldens actually don't know the meaning of the word fear either.

Or a lot of words, for that matter.

HA -- "Blab-blah- blah- GINGER...Blah - blah blah blah !" Favorite Far Side cartoon!

Max was afraid of the cat, guitars ( that if you bumped fell and made a LARGE noise) and getting caught on the fence ... Max dug holes by the fence but was afraid of the edge of chain link and never escaped..UNTIL Yukon arrived. Max dug... Yukon went right out... and ran! Max copied (no longer afraid ) and roaned the neighbor's yard then came home and sat in our front yard till we got back. I would just call the dog officer and have them let me know when they got the call .. usually Yukon stopped about a mile away, always at a house with a deck and people looked at his pretty pitiful look and would feed him!

Miss those dogs sometimes - been go about 14 and 12 years now !

This too is one of my favorite Far Side cartoons.

That and the one where the guy is in a stall next to the mummy, and he dropped the roll of toilet paper. "Fred was about to feel the full wrath of the mummy" or something like that.
