Completed the Golden Gate 50k Trail Run this past weekend and got a report done. It's extra, extra long, so be prepared to devote an hour or two if you choose to read it. Used a bit of a different writing style this time. Wish I was better at writing, 'cause I do love to do it. Anyway, here it is: http://fatozzig.blogspot.com/

Great report! I enjoyed the writing style. Sounds like brutal conditions. I HATE being cold. There are few things more miserable for me. Way to tough it out!

I can offer empathy, sympathy for those type conditions. Sad to say I have had about 6 of races in cold, rain and mud. About 4 of them were 50 milers and not a lot of fun. Vermont 2003 was a SOB and then again in 2009. A bloody survival in both cases. Of course 650 MB bikes going out first kind of "softened" the footing to multiple inches of mud almost from the start.

The hardest part of racing in conditions like this staying reletively dry which implies warmth. I also always have that extra wind breaker tired around my waist. Many times I never use it. The few times I have, it saved me from hypothermia and allowed me finished albeit soggy and tired.

I'm sure for each race you do from now on, you will study the weather and prepare for the shittiest conditions.

The real crappy part is for the month or more leading up to the race, we had absolutely gorgeous weather in Northern CA. Figures.

I go back on March 19 for the Pirate's Cove 50k. Keeping fingers crossed for better weather.

Just read your report. I felt like I was there, very immediate and descriptive. What a day to run 50k out there. My one run in the Headlands taught me how beautiful and challenging the area is. That run up the stairs and then the uneven dirt and rock path from Pirates Cove up to Coyote Ridge is tough in the best of conditions. I can hardly imagine doing it in steady cold rain. I think I need a hot cup of tea now.

Great job. And I think this is great preparation for a 50 miler. At any point in that race, no matter how tired you are, you can say to yourself, "I've experienced worse."
