I don't do resolutions, never have. Actually the missus and I have a bit of a tradition we engage in on our way back from any vacation where we look at the last year and set goals for the next. That said, there's a few things I want to peg on 2012 by way of aspirational goals.

1) Running. Okay, okay, I'm running again, I can't deny it by saying that it's a "trial". It's hard to look back at the old logs and see the two and a half year stretch where the least mileage I had over the course of a week was 42, and then compare it with the paltry distances I'm shuffling these days, but I'll take the ability to lace up and go out over just sitting around.

Realistic goal? Hmmm. I'm running every other day. That makes for weeks where I can look at > 20 mpw and others where it will be > 15. With winter here and the desire not to get hurt I think that I won't push it much. I reckon I can average about 17 per week all things considered. Say 400 miles by July 1st and perhaps 500 for the back half of the year. 900 overall.

I'll take anything between 800 and 1000

2) Stress. I don't talk about it much here, but it is a big part of my life at work. Big. I've managed to control it over the last couple of years, or rather control my reaction to the pressures of work. What with the medical issues I am facing it was rather imperative that I get a handle on my stress levels, and I have. But we are facing a new CEO, new CIO, new boss likely in the coming weeks, lots of insane work demands. My goal is to get out and walk at least an hour a day. To as much as possible take a lunch hour. And to leave it at work when I leave for the day (HA).

3) Lifestyle. We made a major dietary change a bit over a year ago to remove most prepared foods from our diet, high glycemic, starchy foods (taters), wheat flour, and glutamate analogs (those things you look at and scratch your head at in the ingredients lists), along with sugar. As a consequence I'm eating far more and losing weight and feeling a whole lot better. I want to continue this and see what the upshot is this time next year. Feeling good has its advantages. But the diet seems to have contributed to kidney stones. Not sure what to do now as I am damned if I do and damned if I don't.!

Oh. More beer. Definitely more beer.

Skiing. If we get the snow.

Hiking and camping, as soon as we can get into the back country and as long as we can until it gets too cold and icy.

Banjo. Bodhran. Music. Lots of it. Evenings with friends, performances, you name it. A goal: Get invited to perform a solo set at a folk festival this summer. Gack.

Did I mention more beer? Anyone have an Erdinger Dunkel around here?

4) Writing. I commit to 15 minutes a day of non-focused writing. Just for the hell of it. Just for me.

5) Contra Dance. In the last year we took on the "ownership" of our local dance series and I am the principal caller. We've also called at workshops and other dances here in Alberta and I'd like to expand that a bit and see if I can call out of province.
