But then again you know how much I cherish every moment I spent in those hallowed halls of academe and how beloved my memories are of the many wonderful people I shared that experience with.

Never thought of it before... but given the school I went to I would guess that none of them got pulled into the sex trade. I'd suspect several of drinking or a high end drug here and there, but almost every person in the school came from a wealthy family and likely wouldn't be needing money.
That said, things change and it could happen... I just don't think it did.

Hi Jenna!

I suspect much of it comes from believing that's all you are good for. I was sexually abused by a teacher. While thankfully I never ended up in that industry, I certainly have made some life choices I woudln't have made had that not happened. Looking back, I'm certain there were at least two other girls he abused that year. Years later I did report him and found two other girls that he had also abused. So, figure 3-5 girls per year, assuming a 25 year career, I'm certain at least some of them ended up there.

Damn, lady. Damn. Your story blows me away.

In the movie, a victim's sister said "my sister tried really hard to get a non-sex job, but couldn't find one to support her child with." another victim's sister said "she worked at a Waffle House for a while, but when she saw how much I was making as an escort, she decided to do it too." Part of their decision was about money.

But going back to what you're saying about self-esteem...why didn't they get onto the college track or start families (just as valid and valuable as college) or stay with their original families, and thus not fall into the sex trades? Did they think this was their best bet?

Now, I did not go right into college. I did not start a family. I did not stay with my family. I was on my own, rather young. Why did I not fall into the sex trades?

First thought: I'm really not a sexy gal, or whatever. I don't have that "look" that some pimp would notice.

Second thought: I wasn't sexually abused. Thank God. I am so lucky.

Third thought: despite my parents' lack of perfection, they loved me and provided boundaries-n-shit.

Last thought: I usually keep to myself and my hobbies aren't high-risk. I'm a regular Girl Scout.

I'll stop rambling, now!
