Rest day for me. My legs are feeling it too. If I have time, I will jump on my bike for half an hour tonight to stretch my log legs out.

It has been raining, raining, raining here, but the temps are awesome. I need to make sure to appreciate/relish this fantastic spring weather before the heat comes. I am really looking forward to seeing some green too - you, know, those things called leaves. It is amazing how much yesterday's rain already caused the grass to green up. Good bye snow and brown - time for some Spring!

Greetings, everyone.

The legs are going to get at least two days of rest, I'm thinking. Owwww. In a good way though. Assuming I don't forget, bi/tri/core stuff will be on tap for later today.

Morning all,

I'm still hobbling around like an old person today after the 50K on Saturday. I started to write a mini-race report in this post, but it was turning into a novel so I cut and pasted it into Word. I'll post a real report later today. Anyway I survived the 50K in 80+ degree weather. Finished slower than I was shooting for, but finished. Ended up 28th overall in 6:49 as my time. I'll take it.

Later.

Bah re snow. I kept thinking yesterday if it was a few degrees cooler, we'd be getting inundated with snow. Thankfully, it is just rain and almost all of the snow has now melted. But I feel for all of you getting more of the white stuff.

Tim - nice work! I cannot imagine that type of race in 80+ degree weather. I am such a wimpy runner in the heat.

Brandy - yay to you and winter both on itty bitty pants.

RAWR!!! Awesome job!

Brandy - Woohoo for getting into smaller pants! (And apparently I missed where Winterbabe did this too? Awesome!)

An interesting thing I'm learning this morning: Yesterday at the race, by the time I finished (2:18:xx) + about 20 minutes in the med tent, ALL post-race food was gone. Apparently more came in, but quickly went away too. Publix was the main sponsor, and it appears that bags were being handed to finishers as runners were told by teenage volunteers to take as much as they wanted, including stuff for their friends.

As much as they wanted? Some people were filling their bags to capacity as if it were Halloween and they were trick-or-treating. No freaking wonder supplies ran out! I've never seen a situation like that before. Have you guys? Methinks that setup will change next year. I mean really, runners don't need more than what we can carry in 2 hands, anyway. Hydration + carbs and/or protein, and we're good. We're not expecting a damn buffet! :)

I was lucky in that Maccabeth kindly offered to pay for my meal at a nearby Taco Mac. Next year, I will certainly be packing my own post-race emergency stash in my gear-check bag!

WTG Tim!

Well I am proud of myself as this morning as I finally started my non-running stuff. I worked out on the home gym and then put the dreaded 30 minute pilate dvd into the player. I bet it's been a year since I completed that workout. I was hurting before it was over rofl.

Yesterday I made an executive decision to abandon the one hour runner program. This isn't as bad as it seems. I will actually run for an hour before the program is scheduled for me to do so. Thus I will still accomplish that goal, only sooner than later. My pace is simply too slow right now and I would not come close to running 6 miles before the 10k if I stick to the OHR. Therefore I am going to switch to a distance buildup program leading up to the race. I just think it would be worse for me to strictly adhere to the OHR program and yet only hit maybe 4 or 4.5 miles before the run. When you are just starting back jumping from 4 to 6 miles is a leap. So I am going to build up each week and create a long run on Saturdays. I'll try to improve my pace as well.

My toe is better and only slightly discolored. I hope it does not give me trouble tomorrow morning. Maybe it won't.

Have a great fitness day everyone.

A little treadmill time before little miss evil this morning. Sore and tired from yesterday, but in a tolerable kind of way.

Congrats on the 50K TimR and the small pants, Brandy.

Having some debates about the HM training plan. We were swapping notes with someone else training for a half, and there plan is quite a bit different. From here out we have scheduled:

Long run/total weekly mileage:

10/18

11/21

12/22

9/18

8/15

13.1/19

The other plan is maxing out at 10 for the long run. So, wise ones, do I still with my plan or back off a bit?

I like getting closer to the actual race distance in my training plans. so I would stick to what you have. Others may disagree. :)
No, we were within visual sight of each other and the first check point. Then by checkpoint #2 he was ahead of me by 9 minutes. He bonked hard late in the race too, but manage to pull together a solid finish for 6:05 and 12th overall. There's a pic of me wade and keith on FB.

I didn't eat or drink enough. Garmin said I burned over 3600 calories. I took 4 gels with me and a couple of mini-snickers to supplement what they had at the aid stations. But as in any race, when you're that hot, you don't really feel like stuffing your face. They had EVERYTHING at the aid stations including, water, gator ade, coke, mtn dew, PB&J, pretzels (these pretzels are making me thirsty) cookies, trail mix, an assortment of chips. The only thing that I managed to take in other than my usual water / gator ade and gel was some chips ahoy and some coke. Didn't seem to impact me negatively (any more that I could tell) given that my stomach was upset because I was severely dehydrated.

If I could offer a tip it would be this. This is the type of race that the tortise wins. Slow and steady is the way to go. Try to get into a rythm of running that is easy and pretty much nothing more than a simple trot. Don't run. People caught and passed me late in the race that I had major minutes on early in the race. I was reduced to a walking delirious blithering idiot while they just energizer bunnied on by me. But, I would do it again. :)

Hiya folks!

Great job this weekend Brandy, Ailarie and Tim!

Yesterday was day 18 of the 100 day challenge for me. Got in a bike ride in TOG wind last night. WIth the rain showers expected most of the day here im not sure what ill be doing activity wise. Might have to get on the dreadmill later, we shall see.

Amy, I like the plan youve shown but as Tonya said, others might disagree with me. When it comes time to start training for one of the HMs I have planned this year, maybe ill get that plan from you.

Speaking of HMs and races, I have a question for you folks. Not a QOD perse. How far would you drive to do a distance race ( ie HM, full or ultra ) I know with a lot of you back east you can drive 3-4 hours and be a state or two away from were you started. Out here I can barely get to the border of AZ in 3 hrs. Im looking at some races in Colorado and Utah that are about an 8-10 hour drive. WIth the airline prices getting higher I was thinking of maybe driving to some of these races. Your thoughts?

Hi everyone - got out for a fitness walk yesterday, which involved quick walking with form drills & exercises that I would normally do for warmups thrown in randomly. With all the 50K talk lately, I think that's what's burning in my furnace as my next possible goal.

Speaking of 50Ks, congrats Tim! The trails are a whole 'nother beast for sure - rest and heal up well!

Frankie - I'd say going 10 hours or above behind the wheel is starting to push the limits. You can probably get away with it on the way out to the race, but if you do drive 10 hours or longer, you should probably have a midway point where you can stop and sleep on the way back.

I ended up driving to Seattle which somehow I calculated to be a 10-hour trip but turned out to be more like 13-hour excursion; let's just say I was glad I had a stop-over in Eugene on the way back (which actually wasn't my initial plan, but thankfully Duck suggested/offered his abode as a rest-over spot to break up the return trip).

I remember Ann had an 11-hour drive back to SC from the Flying Pig back in '07 immediately after the race because she had to start work the next day - I think everyone there was all pretty amazed at that feat

This is all good info, thanks for sharing! I've been experimenting with the speed of my early miles, many of my training runs I'd be starting off too fast (where too fast = 9-9:30s) and definitely felt it later when I had trouble picking up my legs. Gotta get some feelers out this week for the state of the trails, one of the guys running posted a real nice photo essay of the complete course but it was very dry then, I think Ohio is due for several days of rain this week and that may muddy stuff up.
