Hola. Not fun: Training a client at work today. Not that it's a big deal - it's the whole assembly of the training class (done yesterday) + breaking everything down that is the pain. zzzz.

Hope everyone has a great day today!

morning peeps.

my real estate agent friend sent me this listing last night, saying it was overpriced (and out of my range) but 'oh the character!"

OMG...I want this house. It's pretty much in original condition, meaning it needs work, but all the wood work is intact, a huge double basin sink with built in drain board is still in the kitchen (and no cabinets at all), the bathrooms have the original fixtures...*sigh*. What an amazing house.

*sigh* It's a big house, 2200sf, 4 bedrooms, but I would still love it.

(side note: seems like everything I would like it just out of range for me right now. Meh. SUCKS being a grownup.)

I ran into an acquaintance last night when I was having dinner with a friend. I stopped to talk to him, to see how he was doing, since the home he lived in (an old house with 4 apts) had burned down. He said he was getting back on his feet, was living with family friends, and couldn't believe the outpouring from people in our part of Boston over this. That made me feel good about my community.

I'm just babbling at this point, so I'll bid you all adieu. Ciao.

oh Moe! What a pretty house! I'd probably ditch the floral wallpaper but I like the red wallpaper and would keep it if in good enough kitchen. It's too bad it is out of your price range.

Can someone hook me up with a coffee IV today?

I'd take down all the wall paper and paint instead. I like paint. :) It's out of my range, but if they can't sell it, it's not that far off...so there's a chance.

Nice house, Moe. What town is it in? I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that you can get a lowball offer in for it...

Obviously, getting a new car is on my mind. I remembered something I read recently. I wasn't able to find a link to exactly what I read, but I found this. It doesn't quote the source, but it gives approximately the number I remember. The average price of a car in 2009 (the most recent complete year, obviously) was $28,000! Wow!

My wife and I aren't rich. But we do okay. I think the average salary in the U.S. is something like $35,000, and we're both above average. And yet we've never had a car that cost anywhere close to $28,000. And now that we need a new car, I'm already nervous about paying for another car in the $20k-$22 range.

Do people who earn $35k or less really spend $28k on a car? And that's before you factor in interest from financing?? I don't want to judge anybody for their financial decisions, but it seems irresponsible to me to spend a year's salary on a car. I suppose you can work it out as long as you balance your other spending accordingly. But wow. A $28k vehicle seems almost like a "luxury" vehicle to me, not an "average" one...

boB - it would be interesting to know the range instead of the average. We didn't pay $28k for our escape (and it's pretty nice) so I'm thinking that some of the luxury cars/trucks might be skewing the average.

Nice house Moe, but that wallpaper is f*cking hideous AND in most of the public areas of the house.

I would imagine that most people don't buy new cars and those that do have a bit of money, are really frugal, or are not worried about large debt loads. So, my question is, was that price the average for new cars or all cars purchased in 2009? There are a lot of people I know who have never had a new car.

My string ensemble is coming over this evening to rehearse before tomorrow's recital. The house looks decent enough, but I have to move some furniture in the basement to make room for everyone. Hopefully it will be a fun time. Also getting my hair cut today, but it's supposed to be 99* with a heat index of 108*, so my hair will be a disaster by the time I get home anyway. I may break down and drive to the appt (instead of walk 15 minutes) just to save myself the gross sweatitude that is sure to ensue.

Feeling blue today, so I'll spare you. Have a good one, everyone!

Maureen that house is great! It would be so nice if you could get your hands on it!

I'm feeling rather blah today. I think part of it is pms. Part is just tired, burned out. I just came off a long weekend but I feel like I still need a break. I'm seriously considering going home early and having a long nap.

We have a 2003 Saturn Vue. It's good, for now. But it's also going to need more and more work as time goes on. So we've been looking around at newer vehicles. Only thing is, once you get used to not having a car payment it's really tough to think about having one again. We put out more money per month in childcare than we do on our mortgage. Having a car payment would mean another $400 or so a month. Ugh.

Bob, it's in Roslindale, so part of Boston. It's about a mile from my current home.

It's pretty unlikely I'll get this place but I'm planning on seeing it in the next few days anyway. My agent knows it's too high for me and she's still willing to take me, so I'm gonna go. The thing is, it's a bigger home than I need or want, but it'll give her more idea of what I'm looking for, even though she knows me pretty well (and our first home WAS her home...we bought it from her, that's how we met!)

Just caught up on some of the weekend stuff.

Bob I'm really glad everyone is ok! I'll be keeping an eye on your car search to see what you end up with. We've been talking about a new vehicle for a while and we figure it'll have to be something roomy for the kids.

Missy the countdown is so on! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeee! I'm so excited for you!

I'm excited for all our love birds, too! : )

Catching up...

Bob - I'm so glad you and the family weren't seriously injured! Good luck with the car search...I have no opinion to offer, since my Prius isn't really what you're looking for.

Maureen - you already know this, but hugs galore your way! And awesome house...I would come live there with you! And help tear down wallpaper. No, I lie, I would help paint. Wallpaper, you're on your own!

Alexis and Dave - yayayayayayayayayay! Good luck with a smooth move.

So, I'm settled in, mostly, at my New Jersey apartment. If I leave my car at the apartment, it's a mile to the train station. Then a mile when I get into NYC. 4 miles of walking each day might help me makeup for all the not-so-much exercise I've been doing lately!

I always buy used - if you look at some of the quality brands you can look at cars that are 3-5 years old and get a significant discount. The Outback I mentioned yesterday is an '05 that we bought last year for less than half of the original sticker price and it's in near-perfect shape.

Bob - Cheryl mentioned these two cars yesterday: Many of my friends around here love the Nissan Murano and the Acura MDX. My brother inlaw has the MDX and he really likes it. So you might at it to the list. And for Nissan in addition to the Murano, look at the Rougue. The Rougue is similar in size and shape to the other cars on your list. Also comes in AWD.

All this car talk and Bob's mention of cost reminds me that the best cars are the ones that are paid for. Both of ours are paid for. DW is going to need a replacement for her T&C minivan in a couple of years. Fortunately, we have some money saved so hopefully, we can make a cash purchase and not pick up a car note.

That's going to be our plan this time around too. My brother inlaw that I mentioned bought the MDX used and it was in terrific shape.

cars that are paid for: $400-500 to fix one is better than $400 a month to buy one. Or as the guy at the place that fixed the explorer last week said, even $1200 to fix one you can think of it as a $100 a month car payment, still a better deal.
