It was IRC yesterday, 39 and sunny with a light breeze. You may know much of this but I'll recap anyway as part of sharing my excitement: For the second time in two weeks, I've been lucky like that and with a PR! I had 3 goals as usual for any race, but particularly a 5k: 1) finish without being stopped near the end with puking or the dry heaves, 2) PR and 3) pie-in-the-sky 24:30 or half my age. My last 5k race PR was over a year ago on a tough course, oddly enough, a 25:09. I've raced several 5k's since then but things just never came together. Last month, I did a crazy solo time trial on a weekday lunch break and came up with 24:49 on a pretty easy course but going out too fast. I was so happy at the time but wanted a race PR, holding myself back that first mile.

Yesterday was that day! One of the Y branches had an inaugural race which was free so how can you beat that? I felt confident going into this but you never know. Here's how it went down:

mile splits

DS was with me and ran me in at the finish. 24:45. I had the dreaded dry heaves after that, but at least it happpened there and not 100m earlier! Paul ran with me before that and took these pictures. Thanks, buddy!

My friend Tim from church was also there, ran a 19-something and came in 3rd overall. To be surrounded by such good company made this victory so much sweeter. I'm satisfied with more consistent race results lately than I've had in the past. Those race predictor calculators like Greg McMillan's actually work for me at these distances now, and I think my strength lies in the distances from 10k to the half marathon. I don't know the standings yet, but will come back & update this when I do. Being an inaugural race, the organizers were a little overwhelmed with the data. Paul, what am I forgetting?

eta-thanks for the image posting advice, Lab.

I have become fascinated with age-grading. The Brooks Inspire Daily race series is part of the reason. The series uses the Jack Daniels VDOT formula, and then is age-graded, to assign a score for each recorded race. For my 10k, I received a AG VDOT of 43.744 and for this race, 42.462. And just using the straight AG WMA calculator, the 10k was a 57.95% and this race was a 59.11%. So that's a little confusing.
