Morning all!

Well, DH and I survived the hottest night of the summer without A/C. It was a heat record I think for Toronto yesterday.

And when I stopped at my LRS to check out some shoes that are going on sale, I couldn't believe that there were at least 10 of the Thursday running group that were still going out for a run. Now, I'll go out in some very nasty conditions, but yesterday was pure insanity, especially considering that we've really only had a couple of weeks of significant heat to get acclimatized to it.

I've got my eyes on either a pair of Salomon Crossmax's or the new Montrail Fairhavens.

Decisions, decisions!

No run for me today. Will hit the gym for some core/abs/hips work later.

Have a greta day and terrific weekend everyone!

Hi Heme, tw, and all who follow.

80F at 6:30 this morning with hazy sun and humidity. This Northerner headed to the gym for a mind-numbing 14 miler, most of them at 8:19 pace, although I opened it up in the last two for sub 8 pace. I wish the Sports Channel would change programming once in a while. I watched the same 30 minute sports review about 4 times. The fan was nice though.

Fried Friday indeed.

Smart not to run last night Heme. Tom we'd take that temp drop here for sure.

((flare ups))

Only 6 miles this morning followed by state inspection for my truck. Then I dropped off the metal parts of my wife's antique sewing maching to get powder coated. Watching the end of Tour de France now. With about 8 miles to go a man in a woman's bikini and sun glasses came out of the crowd and started chasing the riders. A marshal grabbed him by the arm and literally threw him into the crowd and on the ground. Cool. Might run another 6 miles tonight. DW is getting her hair done so I'll have some free time.

Hope the temps break for our Northern friends. Know your not set up for it like us. Do you have AC in your cars? You used to be able to buy cars without them.

Thanks for starting, Heme. Hi TW--hope flare-up subsides soon. Like Mike, I went to the gym but just did 2 miles elliptical, 2 miles on the TM. I am going to cut back on the running for a while (except Sunday, when I am committed to keep someone company for her 2-hr run) to see if that lets my knee improve. It's frustrating, since it's 95% better but doesn't want to get to 100%. On the TM, I rely on the Daily Show and/or Colbert Report to get me through. And the tour, but that's over now. Enjoy your heat, KS.

Morning Heme TW, Mike, KS & FO and anyone else who pops in.

5.3 miles in the woods, taking some turns off the normal route to add in some hills. The heat isn't bad here before 9AM or so, especially under tree canopy, but it sure is humid. Supposed to be 95° F tomorrow.

I looked at some pictures on the web page for your Bay to Beach race, KS, no wonder it's hot down there. I didn't see a tree.....anywhere.

sigh....wouldn't you know it, that guy in a bikini at TDF giving cross dressers everywhere a bad name

Mike, you did what I would do. Well, maybe not for 14 miles on a Friday, but hit the treadmill inside. I can handle running in 80° just fine, but that humidity would do me in. Hope this doesn't last long for you guys.

Heme, smart to skip last night's run. I wonder how the group fared? Does it usually get really hot in Toronto? I never thought of it as a "hot spot" for summer heat, but it seems you frequently get pretty warm.

Yike, FO... 2 hour run on a fussy knee? That might knock it down to 90% or lower. You might try pool running too. I know tomwhite, Perchcreek and I all swear by it, but knees weren't really our issue. Oh, I guess Perch did it for his knee recovery, and he's running like a banshee now.

Ks, we don't have AC in our homes for the most part (I suppose some do, but they'd need it just a few weeks out of the year), but newer office buildings do. Most cars do now, of course, but my first 3 vehicles didn't have AC. And our homes are built to retain heat, so on our really warm summer days it can get pretty hot inside. We use fans and our windows are open from May to September, all the time. This summer has been much cooler than normal, so it hasn't been a problem. I'd certainly melt in your daily conditions!

Hi Johnny! Sounds like you're getting some toasty conditions, too! Well, I guess "toasty" and "humid" don't go together, or you'd have soggy toast... but still, that's hot!

Had a really nice run yesterday at lunch, 6.2 miles in a progressive pace manner (not a big deal, just from 8:20 to 7:53) but easy effort. I could feel the hip exercises DH and I did the day before though. Tells me I need to do more of that... Will run today at lunch too, then a short easy 3-4 miler on Saturday. Got a 16.5 mile race with lots of hills and trails on Sunday so want to be rested and ready!

Hi Mike, KS, TW, FO!

{{{TW's flare-up}}}

{{{FO's knee}}}

Yes, KS, most of us have A/C in our cars.... which was a good thing yesterday when the temp readout on my dash going up the Don Valley Parkway read 40°C (104°F).

By this morning, it had dropped to 20°C and is now back to 31. Next week we drop back into the high 20's.

Finally Friday and I escaped early!! Next is a nice cool yoga workout and stretch. No running tonight, but 14+ planned for tomorrow morning.

I don't know if I should 'fess up, but it's only been 60-65F here, with strong (cool) breezes about 50% of the time. People keep saying "where did summer go?", but I have to say it's nearly Perfect - not totally because we've had alot more gray skies than blue. I feel so sorry for you all running in the H&H.

Nice when you have the TM and electric fan option like Mike. Occasional heat is tough because you never get a chance to really acclimate.

I hope your flare-up is short lived, TW. I think you should dress all in WHITE so you can run in the snow unseen...true chameleon cammo color, given the setting.

FO, that knee better realize it's true purpose and heal up soon. ETA: I assume you are icing several times a day? Have you tried Voltaren gel? (It's a topical prescription anti-inflammatory - works great!)

Your runs are going soo well, Johnny - and Mike too - how fun is that!

Hiya to the rest of the gang.

Warm today at 77 but it feels wonderful. A teensy bit of smoke smell from the fire across the river. I went out a little longer than planned but just did. not. want. to. turn. around! Got to my usual 3+ mile turnaround point, and went up the road instead. This is the road you run down after passing mile 7 of the Equinox, so I went up a little past the 7 mile post, just onto the trail below the horse farm, then turned and came back.

7.22 miles, 58:20 total, 8:04 avg
8:07

8:19

8:17

8:12

7:42

7:50

8:03

8:13 for the last .22 mile.

You can sure tell when I turned around and started back... gradual downhill!

Ran longer today because I won't run much tomorrow, 4 max.

We got one of those heat storms today that dropped the temps about 20°. At one point, lightning hit about 20 ft from me as I was right in the doorway of a house. By the time I ran at 8:30 pm, it was 78° and over 90% humidiity. Earlier in the day we had a dew point of 78° and a heat index of 107 while I did a couple hours of yard work..

I ran the longest since I started back. 7.1 miles in 52:26. Couple miles were down around 7 minutes. All systems are working fine so far.

Yikes, Rip.... that's too close. Hope you enjoyed the brief bit of cold, though!

Yes, Erika, Toronto is notorious for short periods of high temps with a lot of humidity. Not usually hot by KS's, MC's or Byll's standards, but it's the sort of moist heat that feels like someone throws a hot blanket over you when you step outside. Thankfully with this heat wave, we didn't get smog along with it.

Going to try to get some sleep now and get up in time to do a LR.

'night all!
