Friday Fun 5-20-2011

<p>I have lots of news, but if I tell all right now, I will hog the entire thread, and really - who needs that?</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The quick news is - I got a job!!   Starting Monday, I will be working at a small firm in North Philly.   I'll be doing some criminal defense and some civil litigation as well.  Hopefully a bit more civil work!!   Although, it won't hurt to get familiar with the criminal justice system in Philly.   There are some good things about it and some things that aren't so great (no benefits is a BIG one).   But, I like the people.  That's a great start.   And, I get to keep teaching at Widener at night, which ROCKS.</p>

<p>This has been an incredibly difficult journey.  I knew the economy was in the toilet, and that the legal market had been hit equally hard.  But honestly, I had no idea it would take EIGHT FREAKING MONTHS to land a job.  Ugh.  Along the way, there have been some serious disappointments, and one unbelievable body blow recently.  It's been a challenge to keep a positive attitude about it, so please forgive me for not coming in here and sharing.</p>

<p>I have TONS to catch up on with all of you, and I am looking forward to it.   Thank you all for the job vibes that were sent out repeatedly!!! </p>

<p>There are billboards all over the place proclaiming that the end is tomorrow, and other propaganda that simply proclaims that it is either judgment day, or the day JC returns.   I don't <em>think</em>  those are the same....   I mean, I'm a learned man, but I am no biblical scholar.</p>

<p>Anyway, there is a billboard right near our house, sponsored by some church, that proclaims the end of the world tomorrow.   So a british pub about a block away from the billboard has this posted:</p>

<p>We've only stepped foot inside this pub once, and it wasn't <em>really</em> by choice.   But we are TOTALLY going on Sunday. <br><span style="display:none;"> </span><br>

<p>Thank you all SO MUCH for the love, well-wishes, and the kind words.   It was a helluva journey - first a cross-country drive,* then a job search that included a total upgrade to the PC so that I didn't throw it out the window (Thank you, <strong>Litch!</strong>), and more missed opportunities than I can count.   I sent out hundreds of applications.  Most didn't even get a response.  I interviewed for a number of jobs along the way.  some great, some not-so-great.   I got SO INCREDIBLY TIRED of hearing how great I was and how much they love me. . . . right before they give the job to someone else.</p>

<p><span>Some bright spots along the way really helped me keep going.   Thanks again to <strong>phdatc</strong> for your help with my efforts to break into the world of academia.   I'll be back later to share stories about THAT.  More drama than I ever thought possible.  <span id="user_yui_3_3_0_8_130591280523027"><img alt="biggrin.gif" id="user_yui_3_3_0_8_130591280523026" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/biggrin.gif" style="width:16px;height:16px;"></span></span></p>

So jealous.   Yet another day of on/off rain and T-storms here.   Seriously, I think it rains less in Seattle!  </p>

<p>I haven't heard any thunder today, but poor Shaggy is hiding under the desk right next to me.  Thunder really freaks her out.  So... my guess is that it's rumbling somewhere and my stupid human ears just can't hear it, or she knows it's coming.</p>

<p>I feel so bad for her.  She is - no kidding - the sweetest dog ever.  And then she gets so scared when thunder rolls....   I really wish I could help her.<br>
