Nirvana - Did you get your book yet?

Man I bought it online the day you gave me the name, but it still hasn't come in the mail yet! Guess that's what happens when you go the "used" route (half.com). Hopefully today or tomorrow though.

Great workouts to all! Even those that do the fishbowl. I was never a very good swimmer so I usually avoid water. Except the hot tub where you can sit and relax!

Diana and I are in Fort Worth waiting for the expo to open so we can pick up our packets. We had a nice little run along the Trinity River this morning. The wind chill was just under 30 but we planned our run so the one mile out was into the wind and the one mile return was with the wind. Stopping made for a quick cool down and back into the car.

So, the temperatures at the start tomorrow will be in the mid-thirties with a SE wind of 5. By 10 it should be in the mid forties and by 11:30, my estimated finishing time it will be sixty. Do I tolerate the cold with shorts? or do I take the heat of tights as the day wears on?

have a great race! I would opt for shorts with two to three layers of shirts. Throw away shirts if you have one with you for the top two layers.

I ran a marathon last year at 20* at the start in shorts and two LS shirts. Two miles into it I was down to one shirt. I am so glad I didn't go with pants. I would have regretted it. Of course that day there was little to no wind.

hey all

I'm back after a while without a computer... got a brand new one though!!
Today was a snow day from school.. and snow/ice all over the ground

I'll hit up the ymca for an hour or so on one of those eliptical ski thingers!

its good to be back.. missed you all!!

AM - 5 easy, 35:26
PM - probably another easy 5

Alex - A little more background... I have done pretty high mileage in the past. I averaged over 90 for a few months several years ago, and I hit 70 as recently as last March. I was only averaging around 15 mpw for the few months before this current rampup, but I was doing more quality. Now I'm running easy at least 6 days a week, and running doubles, which makes it much easier to crank up the mileage. Once I'm over 70 mpw, I'll be less aggressive with the mileage, and start easing back into a little more faster running.

Nirvana, I've been thinking and I can't remember- was there a specific event that started your back issues like did you throw it out or something?
I'm historically horribly inflexible, and have tended in the past to tweak my back somewhat regularly, but it never bothered me longer than a few days to a week max. I've been suprised that you've been out of commission so long, and I'm wondering if you've gone to see someone?

I might have missed where you've told us all of this info before, but I hate to see you out like this.

Morning gang.

Man I wish I had riden my bike to work this morning. 20+ degrees and very little wind, it was awesome! But my girls are taking me out after work tonight to help ease my mopeyness....so no bike and no run today.

As for the fishbowl, I love swimming and being in the water, but I've found I don't like swimming laps with other people in the pool, I feel pressured to be faster and stronger and have perfect form, which based on my tri times, I do not have.

Maybe one of these days I'll go to a techniques course or get a coach...but for now school is priority.

Anyway, good luck racers, good job runners, and please, tell me spring will be here soon.

Hey everyone! I ran my first ever 5k yesterday! Well...sort of! My marathon plan had me running a 5k race as part of my prep, but there obviously wasn't a 5k race to run on a Thursday afternoon - so my running partner and I went to the track for our own little race! I have never ran a 5k before, so I was excited to see what my time would be...hoping for a 7:30 pace or better.

So off we went - way to fast - about a 6:20 pace the first lap - and then settled in. My friend was about 15 feet in front of me for the first two laps, and then he slowed a bit and I passed him...trying to run my own race and pace, but still a bit competitive!

The first mile clocked in at 7:02 - again too fast! Then at mile 1.5 BAM! I tripped on my shoelace - took a headfirst dive onto the track, and rolled on my back! AGH! My friend was behind me, and dodged my fall, and was going to stop for me, but I told him KEEP GOING! I jumped up, and kept running, with one shoe completely untied! Again...I'm a bit competitive!

Probably because of adrenaline I caught up to him and passed him for about a lap, but with one mile to go he passed me. I then passed him with two laps to go, but as we headed down the final stretch - he blew past me and beat me by 5 seconds! I had nothing left in the tank, but ran way faster than I thought I could:

mile one: 7:02
mile two: 7:14
mile three: 7:04

And then, as we were walking a recovery lap it occured to me...12 times around a track is not a 5k!!! It's a 4.8K! AGH! I didn't actually race a 5k! In my head I was thinking that since meters are longer than yards, four laps around would equal 3.1 miles...of course that is wrong...silly, silly me!

So I figured that the average pace of a half lap from my times was about 55 seconds...so I added that on to my time, to give me a pretty accurate 5k time of: 22:25

The funny thing is that when I plugged in that time into McMillan's Running Calculator (http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/cgi-bin/calculations.pl) it has me running a 3:38 marathon! HA! I'll settle for a four hour marathon - breaking my old record of 4:33!

Ok, that's my "race report" from yesterday!

Have great runs!

Oh, I almost forgot!

Then my friend and I went and saw the encore presentation of THE SPIRIT OF THE MARATHON shown at the movie theatre for one night only! It was packed! I guess it showed a couple weeks ago, and sold out everywhere, which is why they had the encore showing! Pretty cool that so many people are that excited!

So anyways, great documentary - focused mainly around the 2005 Chicago marathon! Oh how I want to run on that waterfront in Chicago!
They had stories about
1. An elite runner from Kenya/Japan: Daniel Njenga - who had placed second twice, third once, and fourth once, and was trying so hard to actually WIN Chicago
2. Elite female runner Deena Kastor (great story there...my heart was racing!)
3. A guy (Ryan Bradley) who had missed qualifying for Boston by 22 seconds, and was determined to qualify - only to get injured (very emotional story) and had to cheer his wife on during the marathon as she ran it!
4. Jerry Meyers, a old guy who just keeps going - ran a 6+ hour Chicago, and got his daughter to run with him - really cool guy!
5. Leah Calle and Lori O'Conner - who were both first time marathoner's and their stories - pretty cool. One was a single mom, the other had a husband who couldn't get the whole running thing!

Hope you all can see it someday - and have your family watch it too! I can't wait for my wife to see it - she'll definitely "get it" after seeing this!

Enjoy your day!
Brian

You sound just like me about 6 months ago. Back then McMillan's calculator said I could do a 3:03 as compared to my then-PR of 3:50. I mentioned it to some of you all, and then Crunningman said "you could do it" and gave me some great advice. Basically, keep working those tempo runs...that's the key.

I haven't run the smoking time projected for me by McMillan -- yet -- but I have since BQed and taken nearly a half-hour off my marathon time. I'm starting to actually believe I may do a 3-hour marathon someday.

I am very excited right now. Just checked the latest air quality report and it is in the good category. This means I will be running my 5 miles outside today.

Billy - I seen on the news that some pretty nasty thunderstorms rolled through your area with a lot of damage to homes. Hope all is well.

Richard - I just realized that you have the date wrong on this thread. I thought I was the only one that did that. I had to look a second time to make sure I was posting on the correct daily thread.

Hello again everyone

I have been MIA for a week. Have been sick with the flu-- finally went to the DR yesterday because I had no voice for days and was not getting better. The flu caused laryngitis. Not a good 2 weeks here between the sprained ankle (which is now pain free and getting stronger every day) and then getting sick.

Hoping to start back up again this weekend, but thinking maybe it'd be best to get some rest. Snow day today here in NY! Extra day of rest.

I've browsed through most of the recent workouts, everyone is running/swimming/biking strong as usual Enjoy the weekend!

Great job Brian, esp. after tripping during the race!

Just wondering if I'm the only one: I think of track races as numbers, road races as Ks. In other words, a track race is 5000 meters, but a road race of the same distance is a 5K. I'd kind of like to do a 5000 meter race someday. I have no interest in doing 10000 meters - sounds awfully monotonous.

All that to say maybe you still have your first 5K to look forward to.

We did have thunder, which is strange for February. But it was no big deal in my neighborhood. Thanks for the concern, though. My family went thru this in 1996 when we lost our roof, as did many of our neighbors. For us, it was Not Fun, but we got through it with basically just some inconvenience and extra work. We even had a better property when we were done (new carpet, wooden fence on the property line replaced with cinder block wall, etc).
