To reverse end-stage type 1 diabetes!

More at http://harvardscience.harvard.edu/me...reatment-begun

So here it goes. It's pretty well established by the evidence known that type 1 diabetes is a case of the immune system being stupid and killing off the beta cells in the pancreas. There is also an increasing body of evidence that the beta cells never completely disappear from regenerating, the problem is that the autoimmune attack persists and nukes the beta cells that appear.

So what if there was a way to kill the killer t-cells? That's what Dr. Faustman is trying to do. I believe this is the first human trial to reverse end-stage type 1 diabetes by thwarting the autoimmune attack, there have been other trials to stop the autoimmune attack but those were performed on recently diagnosed type 1 diabetics.

Now, the really cool thing about this if it were to work is that BCG tuberculosis vaccine is a generic drug treatment. It wouldn't be something popped out of the big pharmaceutical patent pipeline of charge an arm and a leg price. Of course there would be cost associated with properly administered dosing and follow up and care, but there wouldn't be the hugely inflated costs for the medicine portion of the treatment.

Maybe it won't work. I don't know. But fuck, it would be so fucking cool if it did work and if one day I could finally say fuck you to insulin makers and the glucose testing strip makers.

I have noticed alot of breaking medical news recently that looks really promising. The problem is it seems like it takes a LOONNGG time before it even gets to phase one... I suppose it is to ensure that human lives are not endangered but then again IF the drugs work, you are saving lives by getting it into the process sooner.

I made a copy&paste error and have now fixed the link in the first post.

They're always very careful about moving things to a phase 1 trial with human subjects, which is good for safety reasons, but it can be frustrating to watch.
