Okay, I think I may have been a little trigger happy on the mouse button when I selected the Half Century length for a bike race on February 10. I had just finished the Houston Marathon and was looking for another adrenaline fix.

I regularly ride 30 miles once per week and go to spinning (no, it is DEFINITELY NOT the same, but it is the best I can do with my mom/work/wife schedule right now!) a couple of times per week. I also run a minimum of 30mpw (a huge decrease from M training) and swim at least 3000m per week.

Anyway, I am worried about a couple of things. This is my first race with my road bike. I can handle my bike just fine, but I am not too practiced at riding with other people. I am having nightmares about crashing into someone and causing the entire field to bite the dust.

The other thing is, of course, just completing the mileage. I have no problems with 30 miles (and that is with a strong headwind - a seabreeze) for half the ride.

I know I am a wuss compared to some of you, but I am a biking and swimming newbie, so I feel like I have made good progress. I just don't know if I am ready for Feb 10!!!

Any advice (besides don't do it!!)?

Thanks!

There are all sorts of people who do those rides, you'll find a nice group to ride along with. They have a lot of snacks along the way, but you may wish to bring a couple in case you are enjoying the company and don't feel like stopping. You should have a great time, make sure to bring enough clothing for whatever weather comes up and enjoy the day, make sure your bike is all A-ok before you head out.

Is this an actual race, or an "organized ride?" If it's just a big group ride, you'll be fine. If it's really a race (timed, competitive, etc) you're nuts!

Is this a race or a tour? If it's a tour, go and have fun. You'll see all sorts or riders. Everything from the shit hot wanna-bes to the K-mart/garage sale jean clad out for a good time riders. If you see someone all over the road, avoid 'em. Other than that, if your find someone riding your pace, ride with 'em and have fun.

My guys have been doing tours for several years. Son #2 did has first metric century on his 9th birthday.

Thank you for all the great responses!! It's really just a tour - it's an MS150 Warm Up ride. Some people will be racing, but I will just be doing it for fun. Kinda like all the running races I have done - I used to just do those for fun, and now I am in it for blood.
