Yeah, LRR saw it, the show-off in blue is climbing in the big ring (don't worry, didn't figure out either, someone had to show me) - and yes, it's Lance.

So as impressive as it might seem, Lance is also out of his saddle, so I'll say it isn't as far out of whack as it might seem. Then again, everybody else is in small chain ring... which does indeed say a lot. But many of them appear seated. So that makes sense.

Lance usually wore black socks...n'est-ce pas! I'd say white socks are an anomoly...but I'm a girl.

But look at the angle of the rear derailleurs. It appears that while Lance is on the big ring, he’s also on his big cog. The other riders…while on the small ring, are on a small cog. So he’s really probably only a gear or two different than the rest of the riders.

Dan

True, and if you look at the gears he probably has a 12-25 on the back and is in the 23 with the 25 being his bail out.

I bet he was planning a break near the top of the hill and wanted to be in the big ring so he wouldn't have to shift. That micro second could be the difference between getting away or not.

That's a classic picture. If you look, the race winner was in the green helmet sittng to the rear of the picture. I raced in Quebec-Montreal where Charles Dionne won, I was hanging on to the back while he was attacking at the front for 6 hours then riding off for the win. It's amazing how fast the best riders are on a bike. Charles is one of the many great riders to come from Quebec, maybe living in the cold isn't so bad...
