favorite running music

I've posted this in other forums but seem to get unsatisfactory responses (lots of rap & heavy metal recommendations) probably due to the age of the participants. Here's my question: what are your 2 or 3 favorite songs to run to?

Here's a couple of mine to start things off:
Your friends are tearing us apart by Eric Clapton (my favorite singer in the world)
I run for life by Melissa Etheridge (how motivational!)
River Deep Mountain Wide by Celine Dion (this one really gets you cooking)
I also like a lot of motown songs.

Have a great day, everyone!
I won't queer the pitch for songs to run to, but I have to confess that I won't wear headphones whilst running outside, and don't recommend them to my coachees.

However, having said that, on the treadmill is a different story, and I like anything that comes from my era (smack to anyone who says Dean Martin!), and Clapton would be good, along with Journey, Bon Jovi, Meatloaf (not too heavy metal I hope), and I absolutely hate (C)rap..... We have TV's on the treads at my gym and I would often have the Music Channels on, so just take what comes - unless it's rap, then I watch the news!......

I'm almost embarrassed to admit I've had 3hrs of Allman Bros. stuff on my MP3 for months on end.

Similar to what Liam said, I don't wear headphones while running outside. I can't hear the bicyclists sneaking up on me from behind. But at the gym, I have to listen to music.

During my formative years (i.e., high school), there were two popular musical genres: Disco and Punk/New Wave. I went the punk/new wave route. That still influences what I listen to today, although they call it Alternative now. So my iPod is full of both old stuff (Ramones, The Clash, Buzzcocks, The Cars, Blondie, Devo, B-52's, etc.), and newer stuff (Offspring, Social Distortion, Foo Fighters, Snow Patrol, Cracker, Midnight Oil, Garbage, etc.). I also have some classic rock: Bruce Springsteen, Led Zeppelin, Eagles, Dire Straits, The Who, Ted Nugent, Pink Floyd, and Steve Miller.

Last night on the elliptical trainer, I had to listen to Social Distortion to get me through my workout. Tonight? Who knows!!
Hey ProfromDover and Liam, good suggestions all! I like a few of the Allman Bros songs but not the slower ones for running (like Sweet Melissa). My hubby has seen them in concert a few times, years back. We also recently went to see Derek Trucks, the son of one of the original band members. I really enjoy Journey, Bob Seger, U2, a little Motown, a little Santana, etc. Our next concerts are Tori Amos (my hubby's choice) and Bruce Springsteen (my choice). Both are coming up next month. We've agreed to splurge the next time the Rolling Stones come to the area and will buy the best tickets we can afford. Hey, how much longer could they possibly perform?

BTW, you're right -- I do mostly run on a treadmill. If I didn't have an Mp3 player, I'd go nuts. There's a TV in front of the treadmills and elliptical trainers but they only get a few news stations, a sports station, and VH1 which usually has awful programming early in the morning (no music, or very little music) and some cooking program (I don't cook hardly ever).

Thanks for your suggestions ~

I also will only wear my mp3 player when on the TM. I HAVE to change up my music because I'm so tired of listening to what is on there, but the songs that I currently have on it that I will keep are some of the funkier James Brown tunes, Tower of Power, John Mellencamp, and Nickelback. I love Nickelback for when I'm ramping up my speedy and intensity. Even if I wasn't planning on cranking up the speed, I can't help it when Nickelback comes on. There are also a few Dave Matthews Band tunes I'll keep on - they have a real good tempo for running.

I love Greg Allman also. DH and I have seen him twice in concert now - one being just this summer at an outdoor amphitheater (The Britt) with Johnny and his wife. great show.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - In to the Great Wide Open
has a few tunes that affected my last night's run highly favorably.
When I'm in big woods jogging, Palestrina, Tallis and the likes (16th century a cappella) give me a cosmic connection.
Some Yes, David Bowie, J. Tull, Sting, Dead Can Dance--depending on the mood.
Who's Who's Next has some keepers.

I didn't listen to any music the first year of running, but it helps me get through the long ones when the hurt starts.
I'm leary of running in traffic with 'phones, even bikes.

riley....I've seen Derek Trucks perform a couple of times and he's quite a talent. I like his wife's music as well (Susan Tedeschi). I've seen her live three times and enjoyed them all. I'm just a big blues fan all the way around. Some good rockin blues for treadmill running comes from Tommy Castro, Doyle Bramhall, Coco Montoya, Shemekia Copeland, Jonny Lang, Deborah Coleman, and of course the oldie but goodie, SRV. Some of the more mellow stuff for those easy relaxing runs includes Keb Mo, Robert Cray, Robben Ford, and even some Delbert McClinton. From Muddy Waters, to Howlin Wolf, to Buddy Guy, to Albert Collins, to Koko Taylor, to Charlie Musselwhite.....it's all good. A few other odds and ends choices include John Hiatt, Lucinda Williams, Colin James, and Edwin McCain. It's all about matching the music to the mood of the day.

I don't listen to music when I run outdoors. Too many good sights and sounds out there.
oh, forgot about Jonny Lang - I have some of his music on my mp3 player that is also very good. I've seen him twice in concert - back when he was more rock/bluesy. The last time I saw him, a few yrs ago, it seems like he's gone more of a softer ballad type musician. I like the "old" Jonny better.

I also saw Susan Tedeschi when she was first making herself known. Buddy Guy introduced her at a show at Pier 70, in Seattle, as a new and upcoming talent. Buddy Guy and Jonny Lang were actually performing that concert. I loved her and promptly bought her first CD. She's an awesome blues singer. real powerful raspy voice.

hadn't thought about Dead Can Dance in years! I think I have a CD of their somewhere . . .
Susan, please don't take this personally, but in my opinion, Celine Dion is an embarrassment to her Home and Native Land. I can endure her singing en français if I don't have to watch her.

I'm not rigid about where or when to listen to music. I think if you keep the volume down and are aware of your surroundings, you can listen anywhere. Be courteous and mindful of others.

Run Lola Run soundtrack. Maria Callas. Ben Heppner. Black Crowes. White Stripes. Sure, Social D (Ball & Chain, Ring of Fire). B&B's own DaveinAA and mcsolar have wonderful mixes. Have you ever heard rap or hip-hop en français? If you don't change your mind after listening to MC Solaar, there's sumpthin' wrong. Of course, any and ALL grunge.

No C&W for me.

Ummm, I AM a "master" but not technically part of this group, but can I toss in a few thoughts anyway?

ohhh, Sounds like Tamster and Pie are music lovers with the same taste as I have.

I love all the people you mentioned (but there are few that I am not familiar with, will have to check those out!) plus a few!

I really enjoy Debbie Davies! Shes a great blues guitarist. Have seen her a couple of times and really enjoyed her! She is probably my fav at this point! (maybe, there are so many that I like)

A few more that I enjoy are Little Charlie and the Nightcats, Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers, Marcia Ball, Ronnie Earl and others.

And yeah, Susan Tedeschi has an awesome voice! I love that throaty, gutsy sound she has!

I have all of these on my mp3 player and they really do the trick when running!
Some great suggestions! BTW I really like Johnny Lang and I've seen Robert Cray (he opened for Eric Clapton); that guy has a voice like velvet. Haven't heard of some of the others -- thanks for some new ideas. BTW I don't usually like Celine either but that particular song makes me kick it into high gear. Has anyone heard of a group called Will Hoge? They're pretty good too.

Sans Souci, one of my kids lives in Montreal so he sometimes tells me about the bands he goes to see and what he listens to, but he's a big abstract jazz fan & I'm more of a bluesy jazz fan. He's getting his PhD at McGill now and I miss him a lot b/c I rarely see him. He teaches chemistry & physics to undergrads and grad students.

I really, really appreciate all these comments and suggestions because I'm getting sick to death of what's currently on my Mp3 player. If I hear "new shoes" by Paolo Nutini one more time I'm going to crush the damn thing underneath my new running shoes! I've just gotta delete that song really fast!

Robert Cray is one I'm going to add to my mp3 player when i get around to changing it. That was another concert that DH and I saw with Johnny and his wife at a great little venue. I've seen him twice now as well and he's truly one of the greats in blues music.

i love talking about music!!
Have you Robert Cray fans heard of Keb Mo? Blusey not jazzy.
-craig
yep - I've seen KebMo also and have a couple of his CD's. I like him also!
Robert Cray was in the house band at Taylor's (a campus dive bar) when I was going to grad school at University of Oregon in the mid-80's. Good bar music!
I am mostly a Classic Rock fan although I love classical, jazz, blues, SRV of course.....some new rock, even love Willie Nelson but most country not. ZZ Top has some great ones for running...Allman Bros, Moody Blues, and of course I have ALL the Led Zeppelin albums.
Until I got my 8 gig player I would switch it up quite often but now I just loaded a bunch of my library (I've got like 43 gigs on harrdrive plus a few of those zip folder cd holders) and just let it play random. If I don't love the song that comes on for the tempo of my run I hit forward. And, I DO Listen running, but NEVER ever on a bike.

If you've never tried podcasts those can be fun too. I can post the URLS of some that I like when I get home. The Roadhouse is a great blues one. And there are talk ones on any subject including running.
Um, sorry to sound really stupid, but what are podcasts and can you listen to them on a regular Mp3 (not an ipod)?

BTW I love Stevie Ray Vaughn & ZZ Top too but absolutely detest Led Zeppelin.

Susan
sierra.....you have good taste. I have seen Debbie Davies live, but only once when she played a local blues fest. It came a big rainstorm in the middle and she just kept on rockin.

riley.....I have seen Will Hoge perform a couple of times. He is originally from Nashville, and he plays in my area fairly regularly.
Lucky kid, Susan. I could use a good hit of Montréal right now. What a great cité! Lots of great music/culture coming out of Montréal, although I wouldn't know much about abstract jazz as it's not really my thing. (We'll find something in common [in addition to running] ... just wait!)
