I suppose I should have posted this before ordering my new iPod shuffle with some custom engraving but I'm happy with what I chose. My iPod Mini, Enid (yes I named her), has been on her last legs for a while with the battery charge only lasting 20 minutes but I got a good 3+ years out of her. So I got a new red number with the following engraving:

Triathlon: Cheaper Than Therapy

It beat out:
Animus Facessere Anima Audere - Latin for "The will to do, the soul to dare"
BRICK: Bike, Run, It Can Kill
Think or Thwim

I like motivational quotes but I like the witty, tongue & cheek ones better.

Sometimes I think therapy would be cheaper.

Enough of this Sunday stroll, Let's hurt a little bit.
Therapy is cheaper...only a $15 copay...but only allowed 10 visits or so a year. Maybe it's 20.

I've thrown a few of my favorites around already:

"Speed work is the icing on the cake. But you don't have cake yet."

"Brakes are a way of expressing fear."

"The first one to use the brakes, loses."

This is a backwards message, but I always enjoyed seeing the slogan for a local masters swim team: Start slow and ease off.

At the Chesapeake Bay Bridge swim a few years ago, there were club members wearing shirts that said something about it being "just one lap." (it's a 4.4 mile swim).

The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.
Ali also said this:

Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them: A desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill

Which is pretty cool, and probably resonates for most people who are training heavily. We're all Champions, right?

surely Ali's best is:

that all you got, George?

into Foreman's ear, late in the fight, Kinshasa, Zaire October 1974

Ali was so cool when I was a kid! Him and Howard Cosell - what a hoot. He had some great quotes...

A man who views the world the same at 50 as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life.

I'm so fast that last night I turned off the light switch in my hotel room and got into bed before the room was dark.

Floats like a butterfly, sting like a bee, his hands can't hit what his eyes can't see.

It will be a killer, and a chiller, and a thriller, when I get the gorilla in Manila!

Joe Frazier is so ugly that when he cries, the tears turn around and go down the back of his head!

My favorite Ali quote is this:

I hated every minute of training, but I said, ''Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.''

A friend emailed it to me when I was complaining about marathon training. It really stuck with me.

"Joe, I'm going to stop it,"
"I want him boss,"
"Sit down son. No-one will ever forget what you did here today."

Exchange in the corner between Eddie Futch and Smokin joe Frazier before (what would have been) the fifteenth round of the thriller in Manila.

That was a hell of a fight

"Sure there have been injuries and even some deaths in boxing - but none of them really that serious."
Ringside Boxing Analyst

My favorite quote. My sister sent this to me when I was thinking about getting out of the Army.

Lewis Caroll, Alice in Wonderland
"Which way do I go?" Asked Alice.
"That depends a great deal upon where you wish to end up." Replied the cat.

Knowing where you want to go is half the battle.
From my dad.......
recently...

"...I believe anybody can do the cool stuff when everything is set up right, but the REAL people look forward to night, rain, pitchin’ decks (he was a Naval Aviator, flew on/off carriers), and other complicating [shit] that runs the weak of heart out of the competition.
