Did I miss last week? Last week was far more impressive and ultra-ish. This weekend was a local 5K race and 40 miles on the bike. About the only ultra thing I've done is be ultra-irritated and another heat wave.

15 miles on roads today. I dilly dallied this morning and only had time for 15 :( oh well. I ran hard and good and up many of the hills. there was a bike race going thru my rural lil town and it was interesting to see the bikers. One of the guys said "there better not be any more hills my legs are gonna fall off" poor dude, he had like a mile uphill ahead of him! LOL

I had an extremely awesome weekend!

Got to meet another KR - tahaseat - for the first time. We ran/walked - he barefoot, me in VFF KSOs - through the woods, went for an airplane ride, and shared ultra and barefooting stories. Extreme fun!

Now, more or less recovered from Burning River, off to train for the next adventure...

Ran 12.5 miles on the trail on Friday, including 4 miles with a friend on her first trail run, which she loved, and then later managed to run through a nest of seed ticks, which I did NOT love. They went all the way through my shoes and socks to my toes! Then ran 9 on the road on Saturday morning after my babysitter forgot me and I missed the group trail run I had planned on going to. But 21.5 miles in 2 days is pretty good for me.

I officially joined your ranks today (at the lowest level). I ran the Turkey Swamp 50K in Freehold, NJ. As it was a training run for the North Country Trail Run in MI in 3 weeks, I'm very happy with my performance. I managed to run a 5:23 and sit right in the mid 10's where I wanted to be.

I wanted to wait till I actually had an ultra under my belt before I started posting. So, here I am.

Hoernigsm -- (that's hard to spell) congrats on the 50K! Nice time too. I hope you don't think that counts as a race report! I'd love to hear the play by play.

Not terribly extreme, but I did finish my first triathlon this weekend. It was a sprint, so just over an hour and out. But, I made it across the lake, which was goal #1!

Will post a race report soon (hopefully) to the multi-sport forum.

Great job at Turkey Swamp, Hoernigsm!

I was there too, ran a 6:16 (12:08 pace), had a tough time first in the humidity (91% at the start) and then in the heat (topped out at 87 degrees). Under those conditions, and given that I'm no heat runner, I'm pretty happy I finished.

I think I had to psych myself up to start just about every lap of the 12 we had to do! Over the second half or so, I fell into a rhythm of running all the single-track and as much of the fields as I could, and walking more than I wanted of the dirt road.

Two years ago, I did the 20-mile race at Turkey Swamp and finished in 3:02 (9:06 pace). This year the first 20 miles took me almost 4 hours, so that's probably a good indicator of the effect of the weather -- plus that this year I've been doing what's a lot for me ... Mayapple, Nipmuck, Escarpment, and now TS.

Came up with 31.3 miles on my GPS. The course was 11 laps of equal length (I estimate 2.65 miles each) plus a shorter 12th lap (2.15 miles). Dirt road, single-track, open fields, more single-track, and then back on the dirt road. All of it pretty darned flat and nontechnical. On the loop: two aid stations, portajohns, and a bathroom in a building. D-Tags and lap counters to keep things straight. Volunteers were very nice and helpful.

I was sad I was unable to make it there this year for the race. That is a good one overall.

Great finish, Hoernigsm! Here's to many more miles and fun!

Saturday - I'm gearing up for Silverton Alpine 50K and the American Discovery Trail Marathon 4:30 pace lead. Both events are road-like so road miles for me :( Ginseng and I did 17 miles total up and down Gold Camp Road. The dirt road is closed to vehicle traffic and winds up into the mountains. So a pretty good road run.

Sunday - too much road running during the week. My legs were owie. I was going to rest but I really felt like getting outside and exploring. Ginseng and I finished hiking a new trail we discovered in a nearby open space. I was hoping it was another route to a local summit but it ended on a different ridge. It helped relieve the adventure urge.

Hoernigsm - Congratulations!!

5 hrs to complete 18 miles on Saturday. Not one of my more stellar running experiences, but I soldiered through it and got a lot of power walking practice. Followed that up with 10 road miles on Sunday.
