Finished my 4th Umstead. my running partner had some issues and I parted way at 62.5 miles because I was not sure I would finish before the cutoff if I stayed with her. She dropped at 75 miles, so I made a good choice and finished my 4th Umstead.

I was at Umstead, and finished the 50 in 12:21 (PR.) Very interesting race in retrospect. My goal at 6am was to do 100, but by 11am I knew.. I wasn't going to make it. I actually almost dropped after 2 laps. Felt horrible. Told my wife I was going to go do the airport spur, and maybe return if I still felt very bad. Of course I didn't, but I convinced myself not to return by resolving only to do 50.

Lap 3 was pretty bad for me, but not as bad as 2. I went into lap 4 about 30 minutes behind PR pace. I knew there wasn't going to be a lap 5, and I made sure of it by running lap 4 as hard as I can. I ran it hard and I was relentless. I ran all but the steepest hills. I ran 2-3 miles at a clip without a walk break. I passed a ton of people in lap 4. The only people to pass me were people like Serj, lapping me.

You can say that I left it all on the course in lap 4.

But you can also say I intentionally sabotaged any chance of finishing the 100 in lap 4. Both perspectives would be true.

This was definitely one of the most interesting race experiences I ever had. I'll write up a report this week.

By the way, I woke last night with lower-side back pain. Kept me up for an hour, but drinking water and going to the bathroom seemed to alleviate the pain a bit. Today I was barely able to pee until the mid-afternoon, despite drinking lots of water. What I did get out was dark-colored. Finally pissed about 4 times in two hours, and it "cleared up". Otherwise felt fine. I drank a lot of water yesterday at the race - refilled my 50-oz pack at every aid station (8 times in 50 miles). Didn't pee a lot then, either. I wonder if there was some sort of renal issue going on. The pain is what really had me worried.

Steve- you KILLED your fourth loop. And yes, totally sabotaged any 100 mile chance, but I think you had resigned subconciously to the 50 mile long before that and came up with a great PR (second PR in 2 weeks!)

You drank a lot and it was not hot. If the pain is now gone and you are peeing ok, I would not be too concerned, but could not hurt to talk to the doc about it. were you overly bloated or sloshy tummy? if you had too much salt maybe the water was not getting to where it should have?

Congrats Steve & Meri!!!!

I went fo a nice 2 hour jaunt on the Baden Powell trail on Saturday (see the photo used in Trailrunner's Trophy series)....gorgeous spring day in the mountains!

Bigger news....Li'l Mud (9 y.o.) entered his first official trail race on Sunday....a 5km. He decided last Wednesday that he'd like to try a race this year, so we surfed the 'net for an event...turns out the best option was only a couple of days away. No time to train...but then again, kids are always running around & he's been playing lots of hockey lately.

He was quite calm & paced himself nicely, then went for the big sprint finish at the end. He finished in 32:55 & got 2nd male under 19...he won a Nathan waistpack & a pair of socks for his effort.

Go Li'l Mud! He looks like a budding star.

I was down in North Carolina with Meri and Steve and Jim and others. Finished my 5th Umstead. After the winter of much snow, I was not surprised that my endurance was not there for the second half. Finished the first 50 in just about 10 hours, then slowly crashed to a pathetic staggering walk/jog/run for awhile. When the goal of sub-24 started to fade, I mostly walked the seventh loop, taking about 4 hours. Then in the middle of the night, after the seventh loop, I think it took me about 15 minutes to negotiate putting on long pants (it was really cold, and I wanted to be warmer for the last lap, and my family was asleep in the car). That made me feel better, but right before dawn (when it's always darkest?), I was on the stretch between the 5 mile marker and the second aid station when I started to fall asleep while walking--micro sleep and mini dreams and everything. I was afraid I would wake up face down on the trail. I shut off my light and music and tried to concentrate on staying awake and upright and finally walked into the aid station, where I drank half a cup of coffee (which I never drink anymore) and dunked 4 cookies in the coffee. I walked on and slowly woke up as the sky brightened. By mile 8, I was running again and I ran it in, passing a number of walkers on the last 4 miles of the course. My time of 25:49 was my second worst at Umstead, but now I can say I finished in the 22s, 23s, 24s, 25s and 26s. Next year, I'd like to go for the 21s not over 27. Despite the struggles, I really love that race. And really, I get out of it what I put in in training, so I can't complain. I can't expect to do the second 50 on memory and experience.

Steve: My 2 cents--don't take ibuprophen during races. It suppresses kidney function and can lead to kidney problems, especially in situations in which you are somewhat dehydrated. that increases the risk of rhabdo.

Great to see everyone, if even for just a few minutes. The ultra community is super. I feel like I am with kindred souls. I would say like in Close Encounters of the Third Kind when the people are all drawn to the mountain, but most of you are probably to young to remember that movie.

Phred-- it was 32 degrees!! I was soooooo cold. And I was dreaming while on the trail, it was so effed up! I have had hallucinations, but this was full out dreams super imposed on the trail. I got to the far aid station at mile 7 and had a caffeine pill washed down with mtn dew and felt much better. Hopefully next year will treat both of us better.

My Umstead didn't go as planned -- all the miles, races, PR's, all of the training loops around the actual course count for nothing when you come down with a cold 48 hours before the start.

I started well, first 2.5 loops were fine, then around 50k, the cold moved down to my chest, and breathing became problematic! I struggled around loop 4 and then called it quits at 50. I did PR for 50... but I wanted a PR at 100. :(

Umstead won't go anywhere, and I will have another go next year.

Totally disappointing, Jim, for sure, but good for you for listening to your body. My second trip out to the Grand teton 100's, I got a nasty cough in my chest, I could barely breath and dropped at 56 miles. It then started to sleet that night and the race dr told me the next day i did the right thing and would have most likely ended up with pneumonia if I kept going. there is always next year and the next race :)
