Sorry to hear about the DNF runNY.

This weekend I spent two hours marking and measuring the trail for a race I'm putting on next year. Then I drove part way home and ran the rest of the way, about 30km through Gatineau Park. There was some snow at the higher elevations, and the trails were nice and muddy.

Ran 13 or so yesterday at Umstead - cold cold rain, lots of it. Ugh.... I don't like it when winter is here

Still - winter released its death grip today, sunny and warmer - went to Jordan Lake with a friend, and found a whole bunch of new trails in some little used state gamelands - so far explored 5 miles, and it looks like there are plenty of 'branches' off of the main trails to check out. I love exploring. There are a bazillion acres of gamelands around the lake - I need to get me some topo maps or something so I can check out other game areas after hunting season

W'happened on your 50K runNYtrails?

Sorry to hear about the DNF runNY. It is one of my deepest fears and I know it's only a "when" not an "if".

I finished my first 50(+) miler at Mountain Masochist Trail Run this weekend. Got to see Marc again. We shared a seat on the bus to the start line. Looks like he pulled off a pretty impressive time considering he said he wasn't feeling 100% (sandbagger!) The predicted snow did not materialize and in fact it was quite pleasantly cool on the course. This means I over-dressed and ran with a jacket around my waist most of the day. I was glad to have it when it got cold around 5pm though.

The race was simultaneously a little easier and a lot harder than I thought it would be. Despite having a 30 min cushion on the cut offs at the half way point I finished only 10 min before the official 12 hour cut off. I'm thrilled to have finished though, am looking forward to another 50 miler (maybe a little flatter?) but will likely head back for MMTR next year. The surprise for me was the mental struggle. I thought I had a lot of mental strength but I had many moments of doubt. I'm apparently not the kind of runner who can turn off their brain and just run. My brain doesn't seem to have an off switch (or I haven't found it yet).

I'll work up a race report over the week (though nobody is under any obligation to read it).

Good job Mobius. DNFs happen, so when it happens for you, remember you are in good company Way to go on your first 50 miler. Actually, i was under the impression that MMTR is 54 miles. I have never ran it because I was afraid those 4 extra miles would put me too close to the cutoff. You should try Bull Run Run, you would like it.

Thanks Merigayle! How hilly is Bull Run Run? I can't find an elevation profile for it. Given it's location I assume it's mostly rolling the entire way but no real significant climbs? I imagine it's actually closer to 50 miles than anything Horton came up with.

Ran the Stonecat 50 Saturday.I had a wonderful time, no breakdowns, not much drama, really just a fun day out in the woods. I ran most of my second loop with Jensparks, who is very good company. She did the marathon, finishing in about 5:05, and making it seem easy. There were only two wetfoot spots on the course, but of course you hit them four times in the 50. During my second and third loops, a race worker raked much of the trail from Al Cat's Lounge to Fast Fred's Cafe, maybe about 2.5 miles. Such service! I told him his arms would be much more beat than my legs would be. I ran for a bit with a guy named Mark Kruger, who had been on the Biggest Losers TV show, lost 129 pounds, and now was running his first 50 mile race. I remain hugely impressed! Another first timer I met was Rose Colleran, who turned a very youthful looking forty on race day. Nice way to celebrate! She and her pacer friends blew past us on the last uphill bit, with about a mile to go, and was just finishing as Damon Steed and I were turning into the playing fields, maybe a minute back. And we thought we were having a strong finish! I've got a bunch of photos on picasa. Here's the link:
