Extreme Races

It seems that every time you turn around these days you find out about another extreme race that is more extreme than the last. The Europeans seem to have it all over US for organizing insane events- case in point:

http://www.theextraordinary.co.uk/ul...les/index.html

Has anyone here actually participated in the Marathon des Sables?

That's insane. After doing the Grand Canyon double crossing a couple of years ago I decided that marathons were enough.

I'm new here, where there seems to a lot of good trail/ultra talk going on!

I told myself I wouldn't do Escarpment after my first time last year. Thought for sure I'd finish in less time than it took me to do Nipmuck's 26.4, but nooo, 18 minutes longer. And then my first 50K* (Ramapo Mountain Madness, NJ), in October, took me only 34 minutes more than Escarpment. But I dunno, they all felt extreme at the time! Still, all three are calling out to me again.

*More or less. Someone messed with the flags, and many runners got lost and ran an unofficial course.
Nipmuck wasn't bad! (Of course, you may not trust someone from Jersey, either.) And my time at NM is what I used to qualify for Escarpment. These events are a good one-two punch!

I hope they put on the RMM 50K again in 2008. NJ has precious few (basically two) ultras, and it's nice to do something in my own backyard for a change.
I didn't receive any photos from any of those events, so I'm curious to see what you've got. Fire away!
CTM, I'm almost certain that one of the women in our lost group* was named Dierdre. Together, the 6 or 7 of us kept going out on loops and circling back to the same aid station (that wasn't part of the RD's plan!). It turned out to be a wonderful day of running, despite the course problems. With about 2.5 miles left, I think it was Dierdre and her friend (Kevin?) who raced it in. I was one of the people bringing up the rear (finished in 6:45).

*There was more than one lost group!

Hope there will be a RMM in 2008 -- and we'll all be able to "run it right" this time.
