First a co-worker, now a very good friend. Mother of 2 (16 and 12). She had some doubts about a rash on her breasts a few months ago and went to her (new) doctor - her old doc, also a close friend of all of ours had retired - and was told that it was nothing.

Last week she was in considerable pain and went in to see the doc. A quick biopsy on Thursday and results on Friday... inflammatory breast cancer. Bone scan on Monday - all through the bones. Incurable. Abdominal scan reveals no further metastisis except some in the aortal lymph nodes. She's seeing the oncology team this week, but they're talking "prolonging life" here.

This one has hit the missus and I very hard. She and her husband are fellow musicians, cross-country skiers, hikers... they share the same interests and values as we do, and we have become close but not as close as our lives or our decisions about our lives have let us. They are amongst the crowd of "shoulds", you know, "We should invite x and y over for supper", or "Hey, how about inviting x and y hiking next weeekend..."

She and a friend organize the annual New Years Eve jam session / pot luck at a local church/community hall, and this year she and her husband and I shared a really special musical time. We'd sort of claimed a room in the hall as ours and spent about an hour jamming away, people coming and going but the music just "clicking". At the end of it she said "Well, you know, Thursdays are free nights around our house..." but the invite was never taken up.

Fuck.

One of my best friends is losing her sister to the same cancer. The progression and seemingly difficulty in diagnosing it is terrifying.

I have a friend who was diagnosed with this form of cancer early. She went to Dana Farber (in Boston) b/c they specialize with it more there and she's had a really good outcome so far. I wish for healing and peace for your friend.

fuck indeed.

Grizz I am so sorry. My mother has incurable breast cancer too...although not IBD. It's so hard to never know what to expect next.

PM me if you want to talk offline. Sadly I've been through this with my mother for the last 6 years (and I had cancer when I was 13.)

I'm so sorry, Grizz.

It's not too late to take them up on those Thursday night visits, bringing a big pot of dinner.

She'll be in my prayers, such as they are.

It's a good reminder Grizz, that whole putting off spending time with people thinking we'll never run out of time.
