The reason Alabama is ranked ahead of South Carolina is because perception by the sports writers and probably the majority of persons following college football is that if Alabama and South Carolina played every weekend, Alabama would win the majority of the games. Two of USC's victories were against Southern Miss and Furman, not exactly power houses. They also lost to Auburn, which is debatable as to how strong they are. If USC can run the table on their SEC schedule (Arkansas, Florida, Tenn and Vandy) they will have a rematch most likely with Alabama. Unless Alabama loses another game I wouldn't see USC being ranked ahead of them prior to the SEC Championship game.
