Earthquake? There was an earthquake?

So there's all sorts of news bulletins flashing by my desktop about this big earthquake that hit Vancouver Island this afternoon. 6.8... sounds relatively large, no?

I text the oby:

"Are you okay? Call..."

and then about 20 minutes later:

"Call me or mom as soon as you can."

So the phone rings:

Me: "Hi son, are you okay?"

He: "Yes, what's up?

Me: "I was just worried about the earthquake."

He: "There was an earthquake, where?"

Me: "Right about where you're standing..."

(at this point my colleague who has been listening in to my end of the conversation starts to laugh.)

Well, that's a relief, I guess.

Ha. I come back from lunch. There is an e-mail from a friend - did you feel the earth quake?

Me: What earthquake?

Him: My building was shaking and I could here the walls cracking.

Me: Huh.

We were maybe 10 k apart. Then I find out that some of our staff were phoning in to their area office reporting that everyone was ok as per our emergency procedures. People at the area office said - what do you mean your ok? They didn't feel it either.

Lesson learned here is that if you live or work on the "loon shit" you are going to feel it a lot more than those of us on high ground.
