I have high blood pressure due to inheriting hypertension from my father's side of the family. Even in the Marine Corps I was borderline hypertensive and they just barely let me in due to my hypertension. Despite running, very little to no salt on my foods, nor salad dressings on my salads as of five years ago I had to start taking medication to control the BP or as my doctor put it, get my final affairs in order for my coming stroke and/or heart attack.

Anyway my medication has been controlling my BP very well but a couple of months ago the mail order facility where I must get my pharmaceutical's from for insurance purposes irritated me so I stopped taking my meds to see what would happen. I didn't take any BP readings the enitre time as I felt well. Wednesday night I wasn't feeling bad, but not well either so I picked up a BP monitor from CVS to verify the reading I received on their inhouse BP monitor. I was partly surprised, partly scared and partly embarrassed.. My first BP reading on my new monitor was 180/112 and in the "red zone" (and pretty much matched what the in-house machine said).

So yesterday I started back on my meds, cut caffeine drastically (enough I had a pretty good headache from withdrawals this morning so I finally had two cups of coffee to relieve that), and started monitoring my BP about every four hours.

This morning it was still 165/109 just after getting up. By this evening I'm finally back down to 139/89. So I'm improving and should be back in the normal range by the middle of next week if not sooner.

I've been thinking all day how stupid that I let someone else get control of my emotions to the point I was willing to put my own life and well being at risk. Sometimes I can be amazingly hard headed.

That could have been the last lesson you learned. I am glad your back on them and the BP is getting back to normal.

Well, since yesterday it's stayed at/or just under under 120/70. So, I'm cancelling my obituary notices for the time being. I'll try to use a little more common sense in the future rather than risking my various body parts that can be damaged by uncontrolled hypertension due to stupidity.

120/70 is nice. Aside from cost, do you notice any side effects from whatever drug you're taking? I have heard that it can lower your heart rate, thus making it difficult to run fast (because you can't get your heart rate up), but, I don't know.

I actually have never noticed any side affects insofar as running or other forms of exercise. I ran sub 4 hour marathons and 1/2 marathons at 1:45 while on hypertensive's and my heart rate was around 154 bpm when I was 51 to 53 year's old. It's closer to 144 bpm now and I'm doing 4:30 to 5 hour marathons and 1/2 marathons at 2:00 to 2:10 but that's more a product of my slowing down and not running as consistently as I used to as well as not practicing speed drills.

My other times from 5k to 10k have suffered as well, but more for the same reasons of being inconsistent in my training.

I think if I worked at it I could get my times closer to where they were 5 years ago. Can't blame the medication for my slower times.

I have to get in shape again. 5 years ago, BEFORE I ran, (but otherwise in grat shape), my BP was 120/80. Never got it checked when I was a runner, but I know my best resting heart rate was 52. Which ain't bad.

Now, the BP is a little "up there". I am assuming that it's because I'm sedentary. Not that that's an excuse. I'm hoping that's the issue, just because I don't like the idea of going on medication. Time will tell, I guess. I'm 52 now, by the way.

144 bpm isn't so bad. My heart meds make it difficult to get mine into 3 digits and I probably top out around 120. What little speed I had ain't there no more.

See, this is what I've heard. Either about BP medication, or maybe it was cholesterol.

I think it may depend on the type of BP medication someone is on. Beta Blockers for example are designed to slow down the heart and might affect exercise abilities. That' why it's important to talk to the doctor about how the BP medication is working.

I'll be 58 next month, so getting up there.
