I know of a couple of other runners who do, the only thing I've done is add custom inserts.

But I had this thought process:

* Bashed up or sore feet can easily add an hour to your 100 mile time - at Javelina I'd guess a severely bashed foot added 2+ hours to mine.

* I would train a whole bunch of hours to knock 1-2 hours off my 100 mile time at the next race (whatever it is.)

* Making my own modifications to a shoe might only take 1-3 hours - maybe more the first time.

So what kind of modifications are within our reach? Extra spot padding? Stretching? Inserting a little plastic bash-shield in the one spot you always get it?

Are there any resources out there? Places that sell kits or supplies or manuals on the subject?

I've made some slight modifications in the past--cutting patches out of my insoles for a dropped metatarsal. Never anything much more serious than that. I'm sure you've got Vonhoff's book, and then there's some basic info at

http://www.adventurecorps.com/downlo...otcaretips.pdf

Those Engo patches are supposed to be really nice. They can reduce friction and give some padding. I hear they stand up really well.

Other than that, I just ran in a pair of shoes with Boa lacing and really loved the fact that I could quickly and easily adjust the lacing. This was great when I broke my leg at JFK and needed to really tighten things up for increased ankle support (all jokes aside).

Holy hell Durt! You're as tough as a 13 year old girl!!!*

The only modifications I've done, is to add Sole insoles. But I could use some tips on punching out the toe box a wee bit.
