I know of a couple of other runners who do, the only thing I've done is add custom inserts.

But I had this thought process:

* Bashed up or sore feet can easily add an hour to your 100 mile time - at Javelina I'd guess a severely bashed foot added 2+ hours to mine.

* I would train a whole bunch of hours to knock 1-2 hours off my 100 mile time at the next race (whatever it is.)

* Making my own modifications to a shoe might only take 1-3 hours - maybe more the first time.

So what kind of modifications are within our reach? Extra spot padding? Stretching? Inserting a little plastic bash-shield in the one spot you always get it?

Are there any resources out there? Places that sell kits or supplies or manuals on the subject?
