1. Why do you run? My father and many other male ancestors died from heart disease. In 1999 when I started a new job and stopped working "management hours" I decided it was time to do something to battle the cards I had been dealt. Twenty two marathons later here I am.
2. What is your greatest accomplishment? Sometimes I regret that I haven't done anything spectacular with my life. But I try to be optimistic and hope that my greatest accomplishment is still ahead of me. Running wise, I am most proud of getting a marathon PR of 3:27:10 in October 2006 at age fifty.
3. What is your motto/theme song? That's easy. It's "Doctor Wu" by Steely Dan. The chorus:
"Are you with me Doctor Wu?
Are you really just a shadow of the man that I once knew?
Are you crazy are you high?
Or just an ordinary guy?
Have you done all you can do?
Are you with me doctor?"
- Lately I've read that the song is about heroin!
4. How do you deal with bad runs? The occasional bad run is inevitable. But I say it had a purpose. Even a bad run is better than no run. Character building and all that. And I can look forward to my next run which will surely be a good one.
5. Do you reward yourself for good runs? How? The self confidence I get from a good run is it's own reward. But sometimes I'll reward myself with ice cream, or some peanut butter and honey on a bagel.
6. Who do you admire most? This is hard. I admire my father most. He was a decent man, highly intelligent, with a tremendous sence of humor. But he died when I was fourteen so my memories of him have faded over the years.
7. What is the greatest advice you have ever received? "Measure twice, cut once." From my father in law. If you ever did carpentry you know exactly what he meant.
8. What do wish you had learned younger? That the girls in my high school were as horny as I was.
9. What do you wish you could do but can't? Play piano or guitar. Sing and hold a tune. But there's really no excuse for it. I just have to decide to start practicing.
10. How would your friends describe your personality? I don't have friends. Really. No, seriously, they'd say I have an insatiable desire to be funny.
11. What do you wear running? favorite outfit? Summer: Red Adidas shorts, yellow Mizuno Elixir racing flats, super thin coolmax socks, cut off tee shirt. Winter: The lightest clothing that will keep me warm.
12. What has been your favorite race? Vermont City Marathon. I've done it eight consecutive years. You guys have got to come up here for this one!
13. Do you have a goal race right now? The Boston Marathon. I've never run faster than 3:42 there and I'd like to get into the 3:30's this time. After that, run under 3:30 at VCM in May, then run under 3:25 for a new PR at the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon in October.
14. What makes you happy? The last two miles of a hot summer training run when I throttle up to 5k speed and it feels effortless and I pass 20-something runners on the Burlington bike path.
15. Tell us one interesting thing about you that you haven't said (at least not often) on this forum in the past. I spent fifteen years managing two bicycle stores and was regarded as one of the top bicycle mechanics in the business. I've built over 1000 custom wheels. Now out of that field since 1997 my technical knowledge is very out of date. One more thing: I am not an Asian doctor!
16. Tell us one interesting thing about another user of this forum that has not been posted (at least not often) on this forum in the past (make sure the other person will not object to posting the info!). Nothing very interesting here but... Grizzly told me that many years ago before we were posting on running chat rooms he spent several weeks on vacation in and around my tiny village here in northern Vermont. When I write about my daily runs he often chimes in and comments with great detail about the roads I run on. Weird!

Aero, my anal sweetie, actually measures thrice. I'm glad he does because sometimes he couldn't get it right on only the second measurement. It's amazing how that happens.

Great post, Wu.

What do you remember most about your dad?

Wu, that's totally cool that you were a bicycle mechanic. Do you ever think of returning to it? I've always enjoyed your sense of humor - sounds like you picked it up from your dad. I'm sure he'd be very proud of your accomplishments!

See you at the pre-Boston gathering!

I bascially lived in Underhill State Park... and we had a piece of land upstate in Montgomery so we were often on Mansfield hiking, or in Burlington drinking. That's the "official" story.

Thanks Wu.

Hey Wu - as a runner, I admire you a lot. You have a lot of innate ability; too bad you didn't start running until late in life. As a person, having met you and hung out with you at Mt. Washington, I know you are a nice, normal easy-going guy.

On chat boards, you are misunderstood, but I understand you are not mean, just trying to be edgy funny. And because I know you can take shit easily, I give it to you freely (just as you love to zing me). Nothing personal.

Very nice POTD - and I am jealous that you live in VT. A real nice state.
